That's Life
Bono Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That's life, that's what people say
You're riding' high in April
Shot down in May.
But I know I'm gonna change that tune,
When I'm back on top in June.

That's life, funny as it seems.
Some people get their kicks,
Steppin' on dreams;
But I don't let it get me down,
'Cause this ol' world keeps spinning around.

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself flat on my face,
I pick myself up and get back in the race.

That's life, I can't deny it
I thought of quitting
But my heart just won't buy it.
If I didn't think it was worth a try,
I'd jump right on a big bird
And then I'd fly.

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself flat on my face,
I pick myself up and get back in the race.

That's life, I can't deny it,
I thought of quitting,
But my heart just won't buy it.

But if nothing's changing come this here July
I'm going to roll myself up in a big ball and die.

Overall Meaning

Bono's "That's Life" is a song that expresses the ups and downs of life. The first verse talks about how life is unpredictable and how you can be successful in one month and a failure in the next. However, the singer of the song, who is going through a tough time, is optimistic that things will change for the better in the future. This theme is further emphasized in the second verse, which talks about people who step on others' dreams to get ahead in life but the singer refuses to let it put him down because the world keeps spinning around. The third verse is about Bono's life experiences where he has been in various situations including being a puppet, pauper, pirate, poet, pawn, and a king. Despite going through all those life experiences including being flat on his face, he has learned that getting back in the race is the most important thing.

The chorus is a reaffirmation of life's unpredictability where the singer says he can't deny it despite wanting to quit when things get tough. The final verse talks about the importance of trying and never giving up but what if nothing changes come the next month he might just give up.

Standards are the test of whether one can truly sing or not and, clearly, this proves Bono can't.
