No reason
Bonobo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's beautiful, and even though
I told you so, you know
We'd face survival, we're leaving lights on
We'll move or go on somehow

Looking like soldiers waiting to drown
And I'm not around no more
And looking at people that don't make a sound
When music's around, stay warm

And we've got no rhyme or no reason now
We've got the time of our lives now

It's seasonal, nobody knows
We'll make it known somehow
Just you and me, and we can see
Small machines and sunrise

Looking like soldiers waiting to drown
And I'm not around no more
Pictures of people that don't make a sound
When music's around, stay warm

And we've got no rhyme and no reason now
We've got the time of our lives now

Pictures of people that don't make a sound
When music's around, stay warm
And we've got no rhyme and no reason now

Looking like soldiers waiting to drown
And I'm not around no more
Lookin at people that don't make a sound
When music's around, stay warm

And we've got no rhyme and no reason now
We've got the time of our lives now

Overall Meaning

The song “No Reason” by Bonobo is a beautiful and haunting track that speaks of the uncertainty of life and the inevitability of change. The first verse talks about facing challenges and surviving, even when the odds are against you. The chorus speaks of having no rhyme or reason but enjoying the time of our lives. The second verse talks about being seasonal, and that nobody knows what the future holds, but we'll make it known somehow. The chorus is repeated, underscoring the point that we have no rhyme or reason, but we should still enjoy life.

In the bridge, the lyrics describe people as looking like soldiers waiting to drown, yet no one makes a sound when music is around. The metaphor of soldiers waiting to drown means people are going through their everyday lives, facing the mundane tasks and struggles that come with it. But they remain silent, as music warms their souls, giving them the strength to carry on.

The song is a reflection of the human experience, with all its ups and downs, and the fact that we have no control over some things, and that's okay. It's a message of hope, telling the listener to enjoy life's mysteries and moments of bliss, even when things are hard.

Line by Line Meaning

It's beautiful, and even though I told you so, you know We'd face survival, we're leaving lights on We'll move or go on somehow
The situation is beautiful despite the challenges associated with it. The singer has already discussed these challenges with the listener. They intend to fight together and find a way to survive amidst the adversity.

Looking like soldiers waiting to drown And I'm not around no more And looking at people that don't make a sound When music's around, stay warm
The singer is observing people around them who look like they are giving up, but the singer cannot be present to help them get back up. The music serves as a comfort blanket for these people.

And we've got no rhyme or no reason now We've got the time of our lives now
There is no logic behind what they are doing, but they are enjoying their lives at that moment to the fullest.

It's seasonal, nobody knows We'll make it known somehow Just you and me, and we can see Small machines and sunrise
The situation might only last for a short period, and nobody knows what could happen next. But the artist and the listener can savour the moment by experiencing the natural beauty around them together.

Pictures of people that don't make a sound When music's around, stay warm And we've got no rhyme and no reason now
Visuals of individuals who are emotionally disconnected suddenly finding warmth in the presence of music. Currently, they do not have a solid reason or plan for their actions.

Looking like soldiers waiting to drown And I'm not around no more Lookin at people that don't make a sound When music's around, stay warm
The same observation as before, but the singer reiterates that they are not present anymore to help said people. Only the music can comfort them.

And we've got no rhyme and no reason now We've got the time of our lives now
Repeated from earlier in the song. Once again, there is no exact reason for what they are doing, but they are taking advantage of and enjoying the time in their life currently.

Returning to this master piece 5 years later and this could be a video that narrates how it feels the isolation of the pandemic.

given me love and hope in cinema and creativity again. music videos can often inspire me more than a film as a filmmaker as they are allowed a closed off unique vision of simple execution often allowing for greater creativity. These two videos with relatively simple concepts yet incredibly well thought out and executed make me realise it's still possible to do something 'new' I use this word with a grain of salt as nothing is truly 'original' and it's naive to think otherwise, but to still be able to present a vision that is inspiring leaves me grateful to the arts and artists who are continuously going forwards and pushing boundaries with creative thought!
