Super Are You
Boredoms Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel like I'm 16 again, youth fades but I still hate myself
Apathy's eating me alive, I'm locked in my room
But unlike other days, where I wanted to die
I'm only comfortable with no one around
But if you ask me, everything's alright
Just leave me alone, It's fine like that

I'm painting places I'm afraid to go to
Dreaming about loving someone that's not me
Stressing over the mirror's reflection
With no one to help me relieve the tension
I feel like the iron rust
Desperately seeking for someone to trust
But don't come too close, or I'll cut your hand

Just leave me alone, It's fine like that
It's fine like that

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Boredoms's song Super Are You reveal a feeling of isolation, self-loathing, and anxiety. The singer in the song is overwhelmed with apathy and is locked in their room, finding comfort only in being alone. They express a desire to escape from their current reality by painting places they're afraid to go to and dreaming about loving someone who isn't them. The singer is also preoccupied with their own appearance, stressing over their reflection in the mirror. There is an underlying sense of desperation and mistrust, with the singer feeling like rust and seeking someone to trust, however, warning them not to come too close or they will be hurt.

The lyrics capture the feelings of a person struggling with mental health issues, wherein they find it difficult to connect with others, and even being around them can cause discomfort. The singer's desire to be alone and portray their life as "fine like that" shows the stigma attached to mental health issues, where people feel like they need to hide their struggles from others to be accepted.

In conclusion, the song deals with the theme of isolation, mental health, and the struggle to find a safe space in a seemingly chaotic world. It serves as a reminder that there are many people out there dealing with similar struggles and it is important to be empathetic and kind towards them.

One of my favorite songs of all time, when I first heard it back in the beginning of 1999 the radio DJ didn't say what the song title or artist was. I didn't find out until almost a year later. I saw them at the Tune In (in New Haven, CT) in 2000. They were the only band that I've seen that was on par with the Butthole Surfers live shows in 1985 & 1986.
