Serenity
Bouncing Souls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I spent some time saying some things I didn't want to say
Convincing someone of something about me, not a lie but not the truth in a way

Slipping into a suit and tie or walking in some shoes
I got lost in that disguise, I guess I had something to prove

But the proof is there in what I do
Talk is cheap and clothes make the man
If it's not a disguise and you know where you stand

I'm a clown, I’m a monkey, maybe I’m a jerk
Whatever you make me out to be
But I know the difference and what you say doesn’t matter to me

I don't care what you think
I’m gonna do what I have to do
Say what you wanna say
Talk’s a waste of time with you

I don't care what you think
I’m gonna do what I have to do
Say what you wanna say
Talk’s a waste of time with you

I don't care what you think
I’m gonna do what I have to do

Say what you wanna say
Talk’s a waste of time with you

Overall Meaning

The Bouncing Souls' song "Serenity" is about being true to oneself and not being affected by other people's opinions of oneself. The opening lines suggest that the singer had spent some time saying things he didn't really mean to convince someone of something about him. He admits that he wasn't lying, but he wasn't telling the whole truth either. This could be interpreted as him trying to fit into a certain mold or pleasing someone else's expectations of him.

The next lines suggest that he got lost in a disguise, probably a metaphor for the different roles he played in his life, slipping into a suit and tie or walking in some shoes. This disguise was something he felt he had to wear to prove something to others. However, he realizes that actions speak louder than words and that it's not about the clothes or the words he says--it's about "what I do." He acknowledges that people often judge others based on their appearance or what they say, but he knows who he truly is, and that's what matters to him.

The chorus emphasizes the singer's disregard for other people's opinions of him. He's going to do what he has to do, regardless of what others might say or think of him. He sees talking as a waste of time with them since he's made up his mind and won't be swayed by their words. Ultimately, the song is about being true to oneself and not allowing others to influence one's decisions or sense of self.

The Bouncing Souls, the best current band going. A band that has been together for 22 years, and yet I still feel like they are my band. They have never sold out, they have lived by the DIY, and FTI philosophy since they started. I band I have the utmost respect for and will hopefully keep going strong for years to come. This is their best song; I wish they would play it live more often.
