McLaren persuaded guitarist Matthew Ashman, bassist Leigh Gorman and percussionist Dave Barbarossa of the original lineup of Adam and the Ants to leave Adam Ant and form a new group, fronted by teen singer Annabella Lwin. McLaren was also going to use Boy George (later of Culture Club fame) as a second lead singer, but he was deemed to be "too wild" for the band. McLaren discovered fourteen year old Lwin while she was working at a dry cleaners, and the group's sound was a mix of her "girlish squeal", Balinese chants, surf instrumentals, new romantic pop melodies, and Barbarossa's Burundi ritual music-influenced tom tom beats, though later moving towards heavy metal. The group released three full-length albums before Lwin quit to pursue a solo career, or was kicked out, in 1983. Ashman went on to form Chiefs of Relief, and in 1995 died from diabetes complications. Lwin and Gorman reunited to release "Wild in the U.S.A." in 1998, adding guitarist Dave Calhoun and drummer Eshan Khadaroo.

I recall first time I saw this video, it was 80s, it was the best era in music and MTV actually showed music videos instead of the BS that they show now, hence Music TV. This was so good, the music, the video and we had fun, we enjoyed the music, we danced to it and we loved this song. I have to admit, I was not a huge fan of theirs, not that I didn't like them, just didn't get a chance to listen to too many of their songs, but then heard some of their music in the movies later and loved every single one of their songs that I heard. If anyone can recommend other songs by them, I would love to hear all of them if possible. Great music is truly timeless and ageless. Brings back some amazing memories of having fun and enjoying life.

Adam went to Malcolm Maclaren for advice/help with production/promotion and nothing happened ... except that Maclaren hired all of the band BUT Adam, put a 16-year-old bit of jailbait in front as the singer ... and Adam hired a whole new band that played with him on most of his hits.

Fun fact: This is Adam Ant's band. Malcolm McLaren stole them away when he formed this band. So Adam went solo. The rest is rock history. Also, lead singer Annabella Lwin, was 16 at the time this song was released. Original art work for the single featured a nude photo of her and it dated back to when she was 14. This prompted an investigation by Scotland Yard.

A couple of months ago I visited delicious pizza in Hollywood and saw a guy looking at the album that's floating in the beach water at the end of this video. started chatting with him and it turns out he toured with Annabella many years ago and was reminiscing and decided to buy the album. Cool encounter. To top it off, I saw Annabella perform a couple nights ago at an 80s bar in Bellflower. She's still as beautiful as ever!

This blew me away when I first heard it, and I didn't know it was a remake of an early '60s song until I heard the Strangeloves' recording. It sounded great in both decades, and still does. And what a great "Scanimate" video - one of the last, I presume, before digital advanced in the '90s and '00s. Thanks for posting!

40 years ago in 1982 i heard the original many times but barely heard this version in 1982. it started getting airplay in the 1990s on retro radio shows.
