Two Steps Ahead
Box Of Frogs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh, ooh

Well, I knew him from before
Woke up screaming with his face at my window
He was banging on my door
There was no way that I was gonna go

'Cause no matter where I am
I'm just two steps ahead of that man
No matter where I am
I'm just two steps ahead of that man

In the mirror on the wall
Were two faces staring at me from the glass
Was it really there at all?
An illusion that would haunt me from the past

'Cause no matter where I am
I'm just two steps ahead of that man
No matter where I am
I'm just two steps ahead of that man

Can't get ahead of that man
I can't, can't get ahead
Can't get ahead of that man
I can't get ahead
Can't get ahead of that man
Can't get ahead
Can't get ahead of that man can't

I was walking down the street
When I heard the sound of
Feet so close behind me
When I turned and looked around
With nobody to be found, it would remind me

'Cause no matter where I am
I'm just two steps ahead of that man
No matter where I am
I'm just two steps ahead of that man

That no matter where I am
I'm just two steps ahead of that man
No matter where I am
I'm just two steps ahead of that man

I can't get ahead
Can't get ahead of that man
I can't get ahead
Can't get ahead of that man
I can't get ahead
Can't get ahead of that man
I can't get ahead
Can't get ahead of that man

I can't get ahead
Can't get ahead of that man

Overall Meaning

The song "Two Steps Ahead" by Box Of Frogs tells the story of a person who is haunted by their past experiences with a man who seems to be chasing after them. The lyrics describe the singer waking up in the middle of the night to find this man standing outside their window, as well as walking down the street and sensing his presence behind them. Despite the fear and anxiety that this man brings, the singer declares that they are always "two steps ahead" of him, implying that they will never let him catch up to them.

The idea of being "two steps ahead" suggests that the singer is constantly on the move, always taking actions to stay ahead of their pursuer. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the challenges and obstacles we face in our lives, where we need to be proactive and take steps to overcome them. Furthermore, the lyrics about the two faces in the mirror and the illusion from the past suggest that the singer is grappling with their own inner demons and past mistakes that continue to haunt them, even as they try to move forward.

Overall, "Two Steps Ahead" is a powerful and evocative song about the struggle to overcome our fears and anxieties, and the importance of staying ahead of the challenges we face in life.
