Old Town Blues
Boy & Bear Lyrics

You got a hold of me now
How you rendered slow
But harder than hell to my ground
I'm looking for my old mans' shoes
I'm kicking off these old town blues
Cos' I just won't survive
There's a raven hovering
But he's keeping me alive
I've known him all my life
He's the spirit of a young man mourning
But like the shadow of a carving knife
He's not the danger but the warning sign
And we're kicking off easy
Hey
I can't seem to move
I'm paralysed
I'm chocking on my holy mood
Cos I wanna be an old man too
I wanna be a role model to my kids
I wanna teach them how to love
But you gotta show me how to live
And we're kicking off easy
The lyrics of Boy & Bear's song Old Town Blues revolve around the themes of finding oneself, overcoming difficulties, and seeking guidance to live a fulfilling life. The opening lines of the song, "To my aching glow, you got a hold of me now, how you rendered slow, but harder than hell to my ground," suggest the singer's struggle with his emotions, with the "aching glow" representing his inner turmoil. He acknowledges that he is being held down by something, although it is not conveyed what this something is. The lyrics suggest that the singer is looking for a way out of his distress, and he is seeking guidance to get him there.
The chorus of the song talks about kicking off old town blues and looking for the singer's old man's shoes. This phrase can indicate that the singer is looking to find some form of grounding to help him overcome his troubles. When he mentions the raven hovering, he suggests that there is still hope left and that he is not alone in his struggles.
The second verse of Old Town Blues talks about the singer's desire to be a role model to his children and teach them how to love. However, he acknowledges that he needs someone to show him how to live. The phrase "choking on my holy mood" suggests that he is grappling with his own self-righteousness, indicating further that he is looking for guidance to overcome this. The final lines of the song, "And we're kicking off easy," suggest that the singer is making progress in overcoming his struggles and finding a way forward.
