Oh Girl
Boy Meets Girl Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, you hold in hand a diamond
And left holds it tight
And you hold in your hand our love
You let it fall from the right
I fell for the love and it cost me
Another painful night
This time I'm afraid you lost me
And without a fight

Girl it's so strange, now my life's rearranged
How you want to say goodbye again- oh
Girl it's so strange, how your feelings can change
Are they real or they only pretend?

Oh girl I don't need you, I never want to see you
Do you understand?
Oh girl I don't need you, I never want to see you
Do you understand?
Oh girl I don't need you, I never want to see you
Do you understand?

And now that you have my heart
You walk away
One thing we never learned is
How to make love stay
Love is a lethal weapon
If you use it wrong
You carry with you my affection
But it's true we don't belong

Girl it's so strange, now my life's rearranged
How you want to say goodbye again- oh
Girl it's so strange, how your feelings can change
Are they real or they only pretend?

Oh girl I don't need you, I never want to see you
Do you understand?
Oh girl I don't need you, I never want to see you
Do you understand?
Oh girl I don't need you, I never want to see you
Do you understand?

Oh girl I don't need you, I never want to see you
Do you understand?
Oh girl I don't need you, I never want to see you
Do you understand?

You hold in your hand a diamond
And left held it tight
Oh, you held in your hand our love
It fell from the right
In closing I remind you
Don't be callous with a heart

Love is just one step behind you,
You'll wait for it if you're smart

How was this not a bigger hit in 1985? Wonderful, excellent song.

@conan5885

Agreed!!
Their first 1985 album is pure Pop gold

You're welcome. Funny thing -- when I put this up, I wrote to the contact link on the Boy Metts Girl website for permission. What I got back was a lovely note from Shannon Rubicam herself (the girl in this video on whom I've had a crush for 23 years) thanking me profusely, because they didn't have it themselves. I just assumed that the artists would have all this stuff. Shannon's note literally made my week, and I'm so happy I was able to help the group out.

Wow! This was a really neat story. I've heard from other Boy Meets Girl listeners that Shannon is fabulous when it comes to actually communicating with fans, and is a down-to-earth, humble person. I was surprised, though, that even she didn't have this amazing video on hand, so thanks again for posting it, as well!!

Awesome story! I recall being attracted to her too when this song was out in the summer 1985. Wasn’t on the radio for long so had buy the the 45. Still have it!

What I also think is so interesting is how they transitioned from TOTAL 80s fashion (hair, clothes) to a pared down look by Waiting For A Star just four years later. Wonder if that was always their look but had to conform in the 80s. Same with Aimee Mann when she was with Til Tuesday.

That's pretty cool

Talk about talent that never got their due this is one of the most sadly forgotten and underrated and talented songwriting teams of the 80s that never got their true respect

@sargusperez

There's nothing more 80's than this video!
