1) Suzannah Powell (born August 16, 1988) is an American rapper, songwriter, producer, and performance artist, best known by her stage name Boyfriend. Raised in Nashville, she found her rap persona upon moving to New Orleans. Boyfriend coined the term “rap-cabaret,” a nod to the emphasis on performance in her music. Described as a "mile-a-minute rhyme-spitter; a bawdy, brassy performance artist and a feminist provocateur," her rhymes address subjects including sex, feminism, gender and empowerment with 'bracingly blue, carefully crafted, comic turns of phrase." She has said that she uses rap as social commentary, and as a way to start conversations about art and identity.
2) BOYFRIEND (보이프렌드) is a boyband from Seoul, South Korea under Starship Entertainment (same label as SISTAR, K.Will, Mad Clown and Monsta X). Boyfriend Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm wearing a really loud shirt
Would you tie all the 's's together?
Ignore every if and no?
My boyfriend says I can't talk to you anymore
If I had a head where my head is, would you look back
Or laugh?
There are so many kinds of pressure
I had to wake up to make everything slow down
And in a crowd you look so miserable, you pitiful dog
You cut it all up and arrange it to your taste
I like the new name
I like these new tastes and friends
My boyfriend says I can't talk to you anymore
The lyrics of Boyfriend's song "Boyfriend" are introspective and emotional. The first verse speaks to the insecurities and doubts that the singer has about themselves. They're asking if someone would notice them in a crowd, even if they're wearing a loud shirt. They then ask if this someone would ignore all the imperfections in their speech and still be interested in them. The uncertainty of whether they'd be accepted is palpable.
The second verse, however, is more focused on the external pressure that the singer feels from their relationship. They mention that their boyfriend has forbidden them from talking to someone (presumably the person they're speaking to in the song). The use of "if I had a head where my head is" adds to this uneasiness, as if they're asking if things were different, would the other person still like them? It's a unique way of questioning if someone likes the singer for who they are or just certain aspects of them. The repetition of the line "my boyfriend says I can't talk to you anymore" drives home the feeling of being trapped and unable to escape.
Overall, the lyrics are full of self-doubt, insecurities, and pressure, both internal and external. The singer is searching for acceptance and validation, but also struggling to understand who they are and what they want.
