Satanist
Boygenius Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Will you be a satanist with me?
Mortgage off your soul to buy your dream
Vacation home in Florida
The collateral the devil's repossessing from me
Trying to score some off-brand ecstasy

Will you be an anarchist with me?
Sleep in cars and kill the bourgeoisie
At least until you find out what a fake I am
Spray-paint my initials on an ATM
I'd burn my cash and smash my old TV

Will you be a nihilist with me?
If nothing matters, man, that's a relief
Solomon had a point when he wrote Ecclesiastes
If nothing can be known, then stupidity is holy
If the void becomes a bore, we'll treat ourselves to some self-belief

(Oh, you know what I should do?)

You wonder
If you can even be seen
From so far away
A slow pull, a seismic drift
Leaning over the edge of the continent
It's so hard to come back
You hang on until it drags
You under
You under

You under
You under

Overall Meaning

In "Satanist," Boygenius probes existentialism through a series of hypothetical questions posed to a potential partner. The lyrics explore themes of capitalism, anarchy, and nihilism, as the singer seeks a kindred spirit to throw off societal expectation and pursue a life of meaninglessness. As the song progresses, the singer wavers between enthusiasm for their proposed lifestyle and self-doubt, wondering if they are even visible from a distance and whether their desire for rebellion is genuine or just a pretense.

The first verse finds the singer proposing a Faustian bargain, mortgaging their soul to purchase a dream vacation home with the devil as their lender. The reference to off-brand ecstasy suggests a desire to escape from the mundanity of everyday life, to find some sense of liberation or transcendence. The second verse asks if their partner will join them in embracing anarchy, the rejection of all forms of governance and hierarchy. They are willing to engage in acts of rebellion such as vandalizing property and setting fire to their possessions. However, the lyric "at least until you find out what a fake I am," suggests that the singer may not truly believe in the substance of their anarchist ideals. Finally, the third verse explores nihilism, the rejection of objective meaning and purpose in life. The singer acknowledges the beauty of nothingness, but finds it occasionally dull and seeks the comfort of self-delusion.
