Us and Them
Brad Smith / Pink Floyd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Us and them
And after all we're only ordinary men
Me and you
God only knows
It's not what we would choose to do
Forward he cried from the rear
And the front rank died
And the general sat
And the lines on the map
Moved from side to side
Black and blue
And who knows which is which and who is who
Up and down
And in the end it's only round 'n round
Haven't you heard it's a battle of words
The poster bearer cried
Listen son, said the man with the gun
There's room for you inside

"I mean, they're not gonna kill ya, so if you give 'em a quick short, sharp, shock, they won't do it again. Dig it? I mean he get off lightly, 'cause I would've given him a thrashing - I only hit him once! It was only a difference of opinion, but really...I mean good manners don't cost nothing do they, eh?"

Down and out
It can't be helped that there's a lot of it about
With, without
And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about?
Out of the way
It's a busy day
I've got things on my mind
For the want of the price

Of tea and a slice
The old man died

Overall Meaning

The song "Us And Them" by Pink Floyd speaks about the division that exists within society based on political and class differences. The song starts with the line "Us and them," which suggests there is an "us" and "them." This "us" and "them" philosophy is often a catalyst for conflict, as people separate themselves based on differences in ideology or class. The second line states "And after all we're only ordinary men / Me and you," which implies that despite all of our differences, we are all human and thus fallible. The next line, "God only knows / It's not what we would choose to do," suggests that God can understand why humans act in certain ways, but they themselves do not choose to act this way.

The chorus continues, with the idea that people can change their opinions and allegiances in a fight. The line "and the lines on the map / Moved from side to side" infers that people can easily switch sides or change their allegiance, even if they don't fully understand what the conflict is about. The final line in the chorus "And who knows which is which and who is who" embodies the confusion that can exist during times of war, where people often become disillusioned with who there fighting for and why.

The lyrics then depict an altercation in progress with a line that reads "Haven't you heard it's a battle of words/ The poster bearer cried / Listen son, said the man with the gun / There's room for you inside." This line implies that while there may be disagreements between people, they can still work towards a common goal instead of fighting.

The song then moves onto talk about how the fighting affects people in society, with lyrics that read "Down and out / It can't be helped that there's a lot of it about / With, without / And who'll deny its what the fighting's all about?" This indicates that the negative effects of the fighting are prevalent in society, regardless of which side wins.
