Their first album, Native Speaker (2011), has received mostly praise from critics, remarkable for its innovative melodies and Standell-Preston's "dynamic" vocals.
Keyboardist Katie Lee left the group during the recording of their 2013 album, Flourish // Perish. Raphaelle Standell-Preston is also the vocal half of Blue Hawaii.
The 30th of April 2015 they released 'Deep In The Iris', their third album.
Hossak
Braids Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Is knocking at my window
With a slice of pizza
And acid in his tum tum
His tum tum
Oh Jordan
Where'd you go to
The lyrics of Braids’ song Hossak present a scenario that is both intriguing and confusing. The opening line of the song presents a boy knocking at the window of the singer, carrying a slice of pizza and acid in his stomach. The boy is not clearly identified, but the fact that he has acid in his stomach suggests that he is under the influence of drugs. The ambiguity surrounding the boy and his intentions is further reinforced with the second line, “Oh Jordan, where’d you go to?”. Who is Jordan? Is he the boy at the window or someone else who has left the singer’s life? The question brings to the fore the theme of separation, isolation or alienation, and a longing for a return to a state of connectedness.
The lyrics of Hossak are, in many ways, reflective of the themes that run throughout the album, Shadow Offering. A sense of unease, uncertainty, and imminent danger permeates the album, and the lyrics of Hossak fit right into that. In Hossak, the ambiguity surrounding the boy and his intentions is a reflection of the confusion, fear, and anxiety that dominates the world that the album creates. The song tells a story of longing, confusion, and desperate hope for connection in a disconnected world.
