Lemonade
Braids Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't want to go out there
I don't want to know what you're wearing
There are black diamonds in your eyes
And just so you know, your skin is scaling

Have you fucked all the stray kids yet?
They're their sleeping in my backyard
They're just looking out for no one
Except to smoke and piss in good fun
With their dogs and wives and new sons
And their mother never will hug
'Cause she's never really found love
Just a woman who will always lug
Just some honey with a nice shove

And what I, and what I found is that we
We're all just sleeping around

And what I, and what I found is that we
We're all just sleeping around

This woman used to come here
With her daughter and her husband
Now no one sees her husband
'Cause her ass has caught the harvest
And her pants have got a good fill
I noticed underneath the window sill

Well I was jerking with my lemonade
I told him to get fucked and then get laid
Now what do you say to a man who's got no taste
Who's really got no potential
Except to procreate for him essential

And what I, and what I found is that we
We're all just sleeping around

And what I, and what I found is that we
We're all just sleeping around

All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love
All we really want to do is love

All we really want to do is love
All we

Overall Meaning

In "Lemonade," Braids starts off by expressing her desire to avoid the outside world and its superficiality. She is able to see past the facade that people put on and can discern the true nature of a person through their eyes. The subject of the song then shifts to the stray kids in her backyard. These kids have no real ambitions in life but to smoke and drink and have fun with their dogs and wives. They have no real purpose in society because they come from broken homes where love is not abundant. The next lines are about a woman whom she used to see frequently with her husband and daughter. However, the woman's husband is now absent because he has left her for someone with a more attractive body, leaving her with a cracked identity. Braids then switches to a different perspective as she talks about herself, calling herself out for only being interested in sex with no real emotional attachment. The refrain of the song is "All we really want to do is love," which is repeated multiple times.

The lyrics in "Lemonade" are about human nature and the emptiness that people feel when they try to find love in superficial places. At the same time, the song acknowledges the fact that most people are simply looking for unconditional love, even if they don't always go about finding it in a healthy manner. The song ultimately suggests that love is the fundamental aspect of human existence, but people often lose sight of that in pursuit of surface-level pleasures.

I love this song because it reminds me of running water. All the layers of sound keep moving and make me feel like I'm just floating in a river that's carrying me to where I need to go. I don't have to know where I'm going. I don't have to worry about making mistakes or hurting people or rushing. I can breathe. All we really want to do is love. Even if it's just for a few minutes.
