Mr. President
Bram Tchaikovsky Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was the dead of night
Hear the sirens moan
They found the President
Dead on the lawn
Mister Secretary
Before his death
They were doing cocaine
They couldn't help but laugh

Oh Mister President
What shall we do
It's a hard way to cram it in
It's already taken you

We orderd a banquet
Sat down to eat
We had the ruler of the Western World
In the Presidents seat
The guest of honour
Was a world in chains
The serving maids wore red suits
We got sunburn in the rain

Oh Mister President
What shall we do
It's a hard way to cram it in
It's already taken you

Oh Mister President
What shall we do

It's a hard way to come in
It's already taken you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bram Tchaikovsky's song "Mr. President" talk about a ghastly event that has taken place in the dead of night. Sirens are heard and the President's body is found on the lawn. The Secretary reveals that the President was doing cocaine before his death and they were all laughing about it. The situation then takes a bizarre turn where the guests of the banquet sit down to eat while the ruler of the Western world is still stuck in the President's chair. The serving maids are dressed in red suits and they suffer sunburn in the rain. The song repeats the refrain, "Oh Mister President, What shall we do? It's a hard way to cram it in, It's already taken you."

The lyrics of the song seem to deal with the corruption and scandal that is often associated with those in positions of power. The idea that the President was doing cocaine and everyone was laughing about it shows the disregard for morals and ethics. The guests at the banquet represent the elite who are "sitting down to eat" while the world is in chains, representing the abuse of power and lack of concern for the common man. The lyrics express a sense of hopelessness and resignation in the face of such corruption.
