Desert
Brand New Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Last night I heard a voice that said, "This is the end"
All my nerves have been worn to the threads
I only honestly have one or two left
I got my faith, I got my family
I got a wire fence around my whole stake
If I believe only half what I read
I got a reason to be dug in deep
It's revelation saying
Don't come running to me
When they're coming for you

I seen those boys kissing boys
With their mouth in the street
But I raised my son to be a righteous man
I made it clear to him what fear of God means

I'd hold him down on the Tompkins Lake
Before I ever let him go to the wolves
The path we walk is only narrow and straight
No son of mine will wander astray
Abomination

Don't come running to me when they're coming for you
(Don't come running to me when they're coming for you)

Last night I heard a voice that said, "Don't give up your gun"
They keep washing right up on those shores
Man they're gathering their numbers up
Those bleeding hearts come marching down my road
Well I'll be waiting right here at my door
It's a lie to say it wouldn't be fun
If you're joining them then I got one
With your name on it

Don't come running to me when they're coming for you
(Don't come running to me when they're coming for you)

Don't come running to me when they come gunning for you
(Don't come running to me when they come gunning for you)

Don't come running to me when they're coming for you
(Don't come running to me when they're coming for you)

God is love

Overall Meaning

The song "Desert" by Brand New is a hauntingly prophetic commentary on the state of society and the inevitability of an impending apocalypse. The song opens with the singer recounting a voice he heard that declared "This is the end", leaving him with only one or two nerves left. He takes solace in his faith, family, and wire fence, but he knows that the world is on the brink of destruction. He warns us not to come running to him when the danger comes, as he is dug in deep and ready to face it head-on.

The lyrics take a dark turn as the singer describes seeing boys kissing boys in the street and how he raised his son to be a righteous man who fears God. He would hold his son down before he let him "go to the wolves", as the path they walk is "narrow and straight". The word "abomination" is used to describe this behavior, which is commonly associated with homophobic rhetoric. The singer seems to be using this as an example of how society has strayed from such narrow and straight paths, and we are now paying the price for it.

In the chorus, the singer warns us not to come running to him when they're coming for us, and he tells us that God is love. It's a complex and thought-provoking song that raises many questions about the state of society and our role in it.
