Brand New Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ever since I was young your word is the word that always won.
Worry and wake the ones you love.
A phone call I'd rather not receive.
Please use my body while I sleep.

My lungs are fresh and yours to keep,
Kept clean and they will let you breathe.
Is this the way a toy feels when its batteries run dry?
I am the watch you always wear but you forget to wind.

Nobody plans to be half a world away at times like these,
So I sat alone and waited out the night.
The best part of what has happened was the part I must have missed.
So I'm asking you to shine it on and stick around.
I'm not writing my goodbyes.
I submit no excuse.

If this is what I have to do I owe you every day I wake.
If I could I would shrink myself and sink through your skin
To your blood cells and remove whatever makes you hurt
But I am too weak to be your cure.

I'm not letting you check out.

You will beat this starting now and you will always be around.
I'm there to monitor your breathing I will watch you while you're sleeping.
I will keep you safe and sound.

Does anybody remember back when you were very young?
Did you ever think that you would be this blessed?

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song, "Ever since I was young your word is the word that always won", suggests a deep imprint of someone's words or presence in the singer's life. It could be interpreted as a parent, a lover, a mentor, or a close friend that has influenced the singer's decisions and perspectives. The following lines, "Worry and wake the ones you love. A phone call I'd rather not receive. Please use my body while I sleep", evoke a sense of duty and sacrifice, as if the singer is willing to help or be present for others no matter the cost. The image of using his/her body while asleep could be interpreted as a sexual invitation, but it could also be seen as a metaphor for how the singer feels used or depleted.

The chorus of the song, "Is this the way a toy feels when its batteries run dry? I am the watch you always wear but you forget to wind. Nobody plans to be half a world away at times like these, So I sat alone and waited out the night", reinforces the theme of being used and neglected. The toy and watch metaphors suggest a sense of replaceability and insignificance, as if the singer is just another gadget or accessory in someone's life. The third line could refer to the feeling of being abandoned or helpless during a crisis, especially if someone dear is far away. The phrase "waited out the night" can also imply emotional darkness or depression.

Throughout the rest of the song, the singer expresses a desire to help, a sense of guilt or indebtedness, and a determination to overcome his/her own weaknesses. The lines "If this is what I have to do I owe you every day I wake" and "But I am too weak to be your cure" reveal the complexity of the singer's emotions, as if he/she is torn between gratitude and resentment towards the person that has influenced his/her life. The ending lines, "You will beat this starting now and you will always be around. I'm there to monitor your breathing I will watch you while you're sleeping. I will keep you safe and sound", suggest a sense of hope and devotion, as if the singer has finally found a way to contribute and connect.

@loveat1ce

their lyrics are the most carefully chosen words... there is NO band, nor there shall be a band that compares to brand new.they are unique in their own way.

My friend just passed away from a motorcycle accident and this song has been on repeat the past few days. Rest in peace Damian, canā€™t believe youā€™re gone. 1:38 hits really hard. I watched him as a machine breathed for him and IVs pumped him with medicine that kept him comfortable.

@tibicenlinnei4014

Damian is watching over you. Live for him.

@thelockdownproject6442

20 years later , I'm still playing and still loving this song !

@MoonBoyAdino

Right here with you. Going through something right now, but nothing helps me get through problems like Brand New

@philbateman1989

I remember listening to this song when I was probably about 15, I was in a typical teenage relationship, really heavy emotions and drama. It was the girl I was dating's favorite song. Those were some hard times, that's a tough age to be. Stuff that you grow up to realize is complete bullshit seems like the end of the world. You're all over the damned place.

@dataust

Then you run into it all over again at 28.Ā  Never really substantial milestones that tell you you've grown up till you have kids.Ā

@dataust

Some emo shit bro dont worry.

@ositoosito4566
