Luca
Brand New Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I disappear do you fear for the sister I took?
When I disappear it is clear I am up to no good
I am drearily bloodletting this bed wetting cosmonaut
Son, the last thing you'll realize you need is what you've already got

So touch me or don't
Just let me know
Where you've been

Please drop me a line with a hook and some raw bleeding bait
For I am uncaught and still swimming alone in the lake
Shimmering under a moon made in anger and haste
Shimmering like a penny out of reach in the subway grate
(You never listen to anything)

So touch me or don't
Just let me know
Where you've been

Or we could leave it alone
I'm sure there's someone who knows
Where you've been

You'll never work well with our group, not with the faults we've found
So we've fixed you with cement galoshes, and no one can save you now
Unless you have friends among fish, there'll still be no air to breathe
You can drink up the entire ocean
We'll still find someone to be everything we know that you'll never be

So touch me or don't
Just let me know
Where you've been

Or we could leave it alone

I'm sure there's someone who knows
Where you've been

Overall Meaning

The song "Luca" by Brand New is a track that explores the theme of personal struggles, particularly in terms of self-identity and the desire for acceptance. In the opening verse of the song, the singer questions whether his actions will result in hurting others, particularly his sister. He then acknowledges that he is up to no good and is engaging in destructive behaviour while struggling to come to terms with how to be a better person. The metaphor of the "bed-wetting cosmonaut" conveys a sense of isolation and helplessness in trying to find a way to fit in.

The chorus of the song is open to interpretation, as the singer sings, "So touch me or don't, just let me know where you've been." This could be interpreted as a plea for connection and understanding or a rejection of the expectations of others. The singer then makes a more explicit request in the following verse, asking for someone to "drop [him] a line with a hook and some raw bleeding bait," suggesting that he needs someone to reach out to him in a meaningful way.

The final verse is more confrontational, as the singer acknowledges his flaws but is met with rejection from others. The metaphor of the "cement galoshes" suggests that he feels trapped and unable to escape the judgment of those around him. The line "You can drink up the entire ocean, we'll still find someone to be everything we know that you'll never be" expresses a sense of futility in trying to live up to the expectations of others. In the end, the singer seems resigned to his fate, suggesting that there may be someone out there who understands his struggles.

One of their more underrated songs, yet it feels like it should be up there with Jesus Christ and The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows.

@spudhufer

This a fucking good album. Brand New are one of those bands I can listen to the lot of their songs back to back and not skip a tune. Science Fiction though.... A masterpiece

So true!!!!!

@hard-heartedhannah

My mom passed away unexpectedly on January 16th of this year. My fiance and I found her in bed and performed CPR until the EMTs arrived, all of us did what we could, but she was gone. For the rest of the day I had cops in and out of my house, my grandparents, my little sister. I had to call my middle sister from states away and tell her on the phone what had happened and listen to her scream. I had to keep it together for them. It was 10pm and my fiance went to get us cigarettes and I was just...finally, I was alone. I climbed into my mom's car and turned this song on as loud as the speakers would go and screamed my fucking head off. Something just told me this was the song I needed to listen to let it out.

I can't say I can't imagine your loss because I can't. It will come for me as it did for you. What I can say is that I empathize. And I hope I have the strength to persist as you have.
