Shower Scene
Brand New Lyrics

It's funny how your worst enemies always seem to
turn out to be all of your
best friend's best friends
But I folded and I told
These aren't things I saved to sing you
but I folded, I told
So draw or throw and I will explode
It's time for you to choose
the bullet or the chapstick
And you are far too cute or whatever he said

Every time I hear it I am wishing I was great
I wish her... past tense my best friend
But I folded and I told
These aren't things I say to save me
But I folded, I told
I hope she's caught in the explosion

It's time for you to choose
the bullet or the chapstick
And you are far too cute or whatever he said

It's time for you to choose
It's time for you to choose
the bullet or the chapstick
This is me in his room
This is me in his room
This is me in his room

Red, gold, I told
We don't play fair
Red, gold, I told
We never stand too close

So I update this almost every single day for you
I begin to hate you for your face and not just the things you do
Go tell him how my wrist is sore

from pulling at your insides all night
Nothing that you do is new to anything or anyone but you

Overall Meaning

The Shower Scene, the opening track of Brand New's debut album "Your Favorite Weapon," starts off with punk rock energy and angst-filled lyrics that give us a glimpse into the mind of a songwriter who is going through a break-up that was catalyzed by infidelity. The songwriter is venting about the duplicity of his ex-girlfriend and his best friend, who he has just found out had an affair. The lines "It's funny how your worst enemies always seem to turn out to be all of your best friend's best friends" and "I wish her... past tense my best friend" are telling us that the songwriter is extremely hurt and feeling betrayed by those closest to him.

The chorus of the song is where the songwriter's frustration and anger reaches its peak. He is asking his ex-girlfriend to make a choice between the "bullet or the chapstick," which could be interpreted as choosing between the painful truth or a comforting lie, respectively. The lyric "and you are far too cute or whatever he said" could be a reference to something his friend had said to her, perhaps justifying the affair.

Towards the end of the song, the reference to "Red, gold, I told" and "We don't play fair, we never stand too close" could be implying that the songwriter and his ex-girlfriend were involved in some kind of game, be it a flirtation or actual infidelity. The line "Nothing that you do is new to anything or anyone but you" further reinforces this idea, suggesting that the songwriter is all too aware of how these kinds of games are often played out.

It's time for you to choose the bullet or the chapstick. And you are far too cute or whatever he said
You need to make a decision on whether you want to play along or face the consequences. Also, I don't care about your pretty face or what anyone else thinks of it.

This is me in his room. Red, gold, I told. We don't play fair. Red, gold, I told. We never stand too close
This is a visual representation of my personal experience with this situation. Things were not fair or honest between us, and we always kept a distance.

So I update this almost every single day for you. I begin to hate you for your face and not just the things you do. Go, tell him how my wrist is sore from pulling at your insides all night. Nothing that you do is new to anything or anyone but you
I constantly obsess over you and update my status or make posts for you. My hatred for you grows beyond the surface level to include everything about you, even your appearance. Also, please inform him of the physical pain I've experienced from dealing with your emotions. There's nothing unique or original about your actions, except that they affect me personally.

This is my absolute favorite album. I think with every album they got a little more abstract and esoteric, but they're still amazing albums. But I can't say I like them more than this one.
