Sowing Season
Brand New Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Was losing all my friends.
Was losing them to drinking and to driving.
Was losing all my friends, but I got them back.

I am on the mend.
At least now I can say that I am trying.
And I hope you will forget things I still lack.
Yeah. Yeah.

Is it in you now,
To barely hear the truth that you have spoken?
Twisted up by knaves,
To make a trap for fools.

Is it in you now,
To watch the things you gave your life to broken?
And stoop and build them up with warn out tools.

Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. (Oh.)
Yeah.

Nothing gets so bad,
A whisper from your father couldn't fix it.
Your whisper's like a bridge, he's a river span.

Take all that you have,
And turn it into something you were missing.
Somebody threw that brick, shattered all your plans.

Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. (Oh.)
Yeah.

Time to get the seeds into the cold ground.
It takes a while to grow anything,
Before it's coming to the end, yeah.

Before you put my body in the cold ground,
Take some time to warm it with your hand,
Before it's coming to an end, yeah.

It's coming to an end, yeah.
It's coming to an end, yeah.

Do you miss the blend,
Colors she left in your black and white field?
Do you feel condemned just being there?

I am not your friend.
I am just a man who knows how to feel.

I am not your friend.
I'm not your lover.
I'm not your family.

Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. (Oh.)
Yeah.

Time to get the seeds into the cold ground.

It takes a while to grow anything,
Before it's coming to the end, yeah

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Brand New's "Sowing Season" describe the feeling of losing friends to reckless behavior. The singer sees those around him engaging in dangerous activities such as drinking and driving, and it seems as though he is losing them fast. However, the singer gains back his friends and begins to mend himself as well. He acknowledges that he lacks certain qualities, but at least he is trying to be a better person. The chorus of the song speaks about the idea of whether or not someone has the strength to confront the truth they have spoken, even if it may not be what they want to hear. The song asks if someone has the power to take something that they had put their life into, and take it apart and rebuild it with worn-out tools.

"If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools"

I thought these lyrics were pretentious back in 2006 when I was 15 and 16 years old listening to it. Now I'm 30, we're about to be anyway , and this is lyrically my most identifiable song probably in the world.
Those are the things that are really brilliant. I remember hearing this song and not thinking too much of it, really liking Jesus and a few others but not this one too much. I like the riff.
This song was definitely written by someone with a lot of emotional maturity, of which I would consider myself an emotionally mature person, you really got to be about this age that I'm at now to really understand the depth of what he's talking about.
I'm about to propose in a few days did someone who have been on and off with for 8 years, we have a kid together. Supposed to get married 6 years ago, then her mom died, and everything went up on its head.
I've tried to stay strong with everything because I hooked up with a lot of chicks as a teenager so I've not been interested in jumping the other chicks for comfort. I really do love her more than anything in this world, but they really take me going away for awhile for her to really see how important I am in her life. She does see that in that hormonal bipolar way that women do, the trust has always been an issue.
In the two years after mother's death I developed a drinking problem which made me virtually unbearable to be around, October. We got back together everything was wonderful, then I got pulled over by a cop who completely violated my trust in law enforcement creating a paranoia in me but it took me a while to shake oh, because I was just getting used to being sober, and I wasn't medicating myself with alcohol anymore.
Anyway, our daughters 6 send over the past few months we were getting along great and things seem to be headed down the right path, and then a brick came in and shattered all the plans.
But, I'm still going to propose because I've been going to propose 4/8 years. I felt like I had already proposed but didn't have an official ring or anything in this has been 6 years ago so I figured that everyone I knew that that was my intention, but as you get older and me sure you realize dad just because you think something is Trivial and materialistic that doesn't mean that everyone views it that way.
and then I find that it wasn't the song sowing season that was pretentious, it was myself. I was pretentious and elitist and heard the song on one listened and disregarded it, didn't think a lot of the lyrics.
Now the lyrics speak to me more than anything. And it's because you need to be humbled by life

If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
    And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
