Untitled 01
Brand New Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I wrote your name and burned it,
see the color of the flame,
and it burned out the whole spectrum
as if you were everything.

Mine just burned gold,
a normal flame.
I am not anything,
and all that I remember
is the feeling of waking up.

When we were kids,
you were the sun to which my eyes would not adjust.
When we were kids,
I was a fountain you could never drink enough.

Then came all the boys who swept you up,
played careless with your heart.
And every night there was a new girl sitting beside me in my car.
Something dies when you grow older,
but you do the best you can.

I am glad.

I am glad,
you found a good man.

Overall Meaning

Brand New's Untitled 01 is a song that is steeped in melancholy, heartbreak and nostalgia. The lyrics appear to be a reflection on a lost love from childhood. The singer of the song seems to have burned a piece of paper with the name of his former lover written on it. He describes the color of the flames and how they 'burned out the whole spectrum as if you were everything'. This may suggest that the lover was all-encompassing and all-consuming in his life. He goes on to describe how his flame was 'normal', suggesting that he was not as emotionally invested in the relationship as the lover.

The singer then reminisces about their childhood, where the former lover was like the sun to which he could not adjust his eyes. He describes how he was like a fountain to her, someone who she could never drink enough of. We then learn that the former lover moved on to other boys who played carelessly with her heart, and the singer was left with other girls in his car. The final stanza of the song reveals that the singer has come to terms with the fact that the former lover has moved on and found a good man, despite the pain and heartache he may have felt.

Chords, because they don't exist anywhere and I had to figure it out. I played it open chords, standard tuning

G C G D

Am C

G

Em Am

C

G

Em

... Repeat once, then at "you could never drink enough --- then came all the boys" that's a constant G. Don't go to C too soon.

Hope this helps.

I thought I knew all the Brand New classics. Somehow I missed this one. Good to know there's always new gold to discover with this band. Those lines about burning names at the beginning are beautiful.
