Brand X were a British jazz fusion band formed in London in 1974. They were active until 1980, followed by a reformation between 1992 and 1999, and were active following a 2016 reunion until 2021. Members have included John Goodsall (guitar),[1] Percy Jones (bass), Robin Lumley (keyboards), and Phil Collins (drums). Jones was the sole constant member throughout the band's existence until October 2020 when he left the band.[2] Founding member Goodsall died on 10 November 2021 and Lumley died on 9 March 2023.[3][4][5]

Many "high hats" off to you, Phil Collins - in your prime, few peers! I actually
saw them not too long after this was released - they briefly toured small
U.S. venues in a big van '77 or '78?). But Phil wasn't with them - think he
had other commitments, at the last moment, and I can't for the life of me
think of whom the drummer was. I just remember being bummed it wasn't
Phil. But they played fantastic in a pretty small club in Atlanta - who
knows where? This LP still holds up quite remarkably. I really got
tired of most fusion bands very quickly (mindless fast riffing, etc.),
but these guys were mostly different, interesting, tasteful, and fun to watch and
listen to. Classy stuff. Geesh, that was 44 years ago!

If anyone ever tells you Phil wasn't a good drummer, this album is your best evidence he was. He was at his peak on this record. Buddy Rich gave it the highest compliment, so if you don't believe me, believe Buddy. The drum parts on this record are technically amazing, but more importantly they are very melodic, you remember each riff he plays like it's a counter melody. Also should be mentioned that engineer Dennis McKay mixed this record. He was the engineer all the fusion drummers of that era wanted. His mix on Return To Forever's "Romantic Warrior" made him famous, after that, everyone wanted him. Gong "Expresso" (aka Gazeus) is another record featuring McKay's fusion mixing genius, with the great Pierre Moerlin on drums.

@The-Silliest-Billy

My first exposure to Phil was the Tarzan soundtrack as a little child, my second was "Sudio" or whatever, and I'd written him off entirely until hearing this stuff. Shows ya how far marketing goes: most people think "in the air tonight" is some of his best work lol

@chiefinspectorshine

@jamir pastman: Funny you should mention "Romantic Warrior". Ever since I got turned onto Brand X, I always saw them as Britain's answer to Return To Forever. 👍🏾👍🏾

@PIPEHEAD

@Chief Inspector Shine Funny you should mention RW, I just got a copy a couple of days ago but haven't listened to it yet. I'm on a bit of a nostalgia trip at the mo. I think it's fair to say these guys have a more convincing Rock edge, and vice versa - no surprises there .................

@chiefinspectorshine

@Paul Peers So I guess when I say Britian's answer, it's not so much genre as feel. To me, no one sounds like RTF and in the same vein, no one sounds like Brand X. God knows I miss both bands. The level of musicianship? Jaw dropping. Enjoy "Romantic Warrior" when you get a chance, my friend. 👍🏾

@PIPEHEAD

@Chief Inspector Shine I'll be doing that any day now, and of course times have changed, there's also some juicy footage on YouTube ! ! !

@ajadrew

@Louis Tescum I can imagine it - I have hundreds of other LP's - all perfect condition!

@louistescum2018

@Andrew Austin Great collection you have there keep them safe. Personally, to me they are worth more than the current market asking price. Very hard to replace in this digital age if damaged or stolen.
