Have You
Brandi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have you ever wandered lonely through the woods?
And everything there feels just as it should
You're part of the life there
You're part of something good
If you've ever wandered lonely through the woods
If you've ever wandered lonlely through the woods

Have you ever stared into a starry sky?
Lying on your back you're asking why
What's the purpose I wonder who am I
If you've ever stared into a starry sky
Have you ever stared into a starry sky

Have you ever been out walking in the snow?
Tried to get back to where you were before
You always end up not knowing where to go

If you've ever been out walking in the snow
If you'd ever been out walking you would know

Overall Meaning

These lyrics from Brandi Carlile's song have you ever evoke feelings of wonder and introspection. The first verse paints a picture of being in nature, wandering alone through the woods. The lyrics suggest that in these surroundings, one is able to feel a connection to the environment and be part of something good. The second verse goes on to describe looking up at a starry sky and the existential questions that can arise from such a view. The singer wonders about the purpose of life and their own place in the grand scheme of things. The third verse talks about being lost in the snow, trying to find your way back to where you came from but not knowing how to get there. Overall, these lyrics seem to be contemplating the larger questions of life and what it means to truly belong.

The imagery in these lyrics is powerful and relatable to many people. Nature has a way of making us feel small and insignificant, yet also connected to everything around us. When we look up at the stars or wander through the woods, we are reminded of the vastness of the universe and our own place within it. The lyrics also suggest a longing for connection and understanding, as we search for meaning in our own lives.

In terms of the music itself, Brandi Carlile's haunting vocals and guitar chords create a sense of melancholy and reflection. The melody of the chorus is simple and memorable, allowing the lyrics to take center stage. The repetition of the phrases "have you ever" and "if you've ever" create a sense of unity, inviting the listener to imagine themselves in these moments and ponder the same questions.

Overall, "have you ever" is a beautiful and introspective song that encourages us to take a step back and contemplate the deeper questions of life. It's a reminder that even in our most lonely moments, we are still connected to something larger and more meaningful.

Her lyrics and style of singing remind me of folk singers of the 1960s and early 1970s. And trust me, that's a compliment.

I can’t tell if it’s sad or happy. Which is what makes this a great song. Mind over matter. I listened to this song a while back when I was in a deep spot in my life, and it made me cry. It sounded so sad. Now that im out of that dark hole, for me it sounds like someone whose wanting, and waiting. It might be a hard pill to swallow, it was a hard one for me. However, happiness is a choice. If anyone can read this and hear me making sense, just swallow that pill already.
