Step By Step
Brandon Davis Lyrics

Well I wasn't there to see the first steps
Or hear the first words
Or watch the doctor bring them in
And there's a lot of time I missed out on I'll never get back again

Call it stepping up or stepping in
But step by step my world went spinning
Around that little heart and angel face
They're growing up and I'm growing old
Making memories we'll always hold
But I thank God for sending them my way
Cause it ain't my blood or DNA that made that precious child
But it don't take rocket science to figure out that they're my life

One day they'll have their first kiss
Their first dance
And their I turned 16 car
And I'll be right there when they walk in hurt from their first broken heart
And I'm longing for those moments along with all the ones I missed
I never knew this was how life would turn out
But I'm sure glad it did

Call it stepping up or stepping in
But step by step my world went spinning
Around that little heart and angel face
They're growing up and I'm growing old
Making memories we'll always hold
But I thank God for sending them my way
Cause it ain't my blood or DNA that made that precious child
But it don't take rocket science to figure out that they're my life

One day they'll look back through all these years and I pray that they'll find
That even though they didn't come from me
They know that they're mine

Call it stepping up or stepping in
But step by step my world went spinning
Around that little heart and angel face
They're growing up and I'm growing old
Making memories we'll always hold
But I thank God for sending them my way

Cause it ain't my blood or DNA that made that precious child
But it don't take rocket science to figure out that they're my life

Overall Meaning

In "Step by Step," Brandon Davis reflects on his journey as a father figure to his step-children. He acknowledges that he wasn't present for their first steps or words, but he feels grateful for the role he has been able to play in their lives. He refers to the child as an "angel face" and recognizes that they have grown up while he has grown old. He speaks candidly about the missed opportunities but also about the memories he has been able to create with his step-children.

Throughout the song, Davis emphasizes that genetics don't necessarily make someone a parent. He states that it is neither his blood nor DNA that made the child precious, but rather the bond he has formed with the child. The song is a moving tribute to fatherhood and the sense of unconditional love that can come from it regardless of biological relationships. Davis emphasizes that he is "stepping up or stepping in" to the role of being a father, and though it may not have been what he expected life to turn out like, he is grateful for the experience.

Best words I ever hears is when my oldest daughter said to me "Eric, you have daughters now...."

I stepped in to their lives when they were a teen and a preteen and when I needed a reason to go on.

They became my girls and I became the Bonus Dad.

Love my girls more than anything.

Thanks for the song!

I don't know or care who put a dumbs down on this song but I know me and several others waited for this song. I'm only 13 years old and there's a lot going on in my life and my step mom and step dad are always there and has always been there so the fact he made this song for anybody stepping up means a lot to me. I've never been able to find a song to share with them and now there is one. I can't stop listening to it. The song is fire dude. I think it has turned into my favorite song and its the only thing helping me get through anything right now. Thank you for the song Brandon. even though I am young I've thought a lot about my future and this might be the song that I dance with my step dad to when I get married. I'm probably gonna get a lot of people telling me that I'm to young to be thinking about that right now but I don't really care by this point is not their desion and this song reminds me so much about my step dad. My bio dad is in and out over half the time my step dad has been there since I was 4 or 5. I want this to be the song that i dance with him with and nothings gonna stop me from making that happen. I love my step dad with a passion and I haven't got to show him this song yet because he don't like country music and I've been very busy but I'm gonna show him soon. Thank you Again Brandon you have no idea how much this means to me.

@weez77

Well I for one certainly appreciate a man like you or a woman like you who can see a child for who he or she is, a sweet child that needs love and caring for. And when you can commit to a child not of your dna and you raise that child, love it care for it cry with it, play with it.That child is surely yours, and god wanted it that way.So god bless all the men and women and even grandparents raising children that's not of their dna.

I thank God each day that my late husband took my kids under his wing. Even adopting my daughter and being a dad to my son when he needed one. Bless him
