After You
Brandon Lay Lyrics

Seven Months That's All It's Been
Girl Your Still Under My Skin
Don't You Know
Don't Need A Photograph To See Your Face
All It Takes Is The Sunday Rain
& There I Go
Flyin' Off The Handle
'bout Things I Can't Change
Wondering If I Wouldn't Have Known Your Name
Would A July Moon Carry That Much Weight
That Song On The Radio Hit Me The Same
Would I Be Driving Magnolia Road
Fightin' The Urge To Call You On The Phone
Could A Yellow Sundress Take me Back
To The Blanket On The Hood Of A Pontiac
I Shouldn't Go There
But Dang It I Do
Welcome To My Life
After You
I Know It Better Than To Hit This Bar
Don't Take Much For Me To Go To Far
Into Missin' You
I Can't Stay Here, But I Can't Go Home
Ain't A Spot In This Town Your Memory Don't Own
There's No Dodgin' You
Just When I Think I'm About To Forget
Somthin' Reminds Me Of Somethin' You Said
Would A July Moon Carry That Much Weight
That Song On The Radio Hit Me The Same
Would I Be Driving Magnolia Road
Fightin' The Urge To Call You On The Phone
Could A Yellow Sundress Take me Back
To The Blanket On The Hood Of A Pontiac
I Shouldn't Go There
But Dang It I Do
Welcome To My Life
After Yooooooou

Would A July Moon Carry That Much Weight
That Song On The Radio Hit Me The Same
Would I Be Driving Magnolia Road
Fightin' The Urge To Call You On The Phone
Could A Yellow Sundress Take me Back
To The Blanket On The Hood Of A Pontiac
I Shouldn't Go There
But Dang Girl I Do
Welcome To My Life
After You

After You

Overall Meaning

Brandon Lay's song "After You" depicts a heartbroken protagonist wrestling with memories and nostalgia over his lost love. The lyrics of the song describe how seven months has passed, but the girl is still under his skin. The singer claims that he doesn't need a photograph to remember her face as all it takes is the Sunday rain, and memories of her come flooding back. The writer then goes on to explain how he tries to escape his emotions and move on, but he is consistently reminded of her presence in his life, as there is no dodging her memory.

The writer questions if he would feel the same way if he never knew her name. Would a July moon or a song on the radio affect him as they do? He imagines himself driving down Magnolia Road, fighting the urge to call her. Even something as simple as a yellow sundress could take him back to the memories of them on the hood of a Pontiac. The singer admits he shouldn't hold onto memories that only create pain, but he does it anyway. The song ends with a melodic repetition of the chorus, "Welcome to my life after you."
