Brave Saint Saturn is an American rock band started as a side project by members of Five Iron Frenzy, a now-defunct Christian ska band. Described by the band as "astro-rock," the music of Brave Saint Saturn (often abbreviated to BS2) is generally more serious than the lighthearted FIF. The group was originally an outlet for Five Iron's frontman, Reese Roper, to explore themes of loneliness and abandonment. BS2 also experimented with more melancholy song composition and ambient sounds, with instruments like synthesizer, glockenspiel, accordion, strings and electronic sampling rounding out the simple, guitar-driven music.
The band's trilogy of albums follow the same outer space-themed story that uses space exploration as an extended metaphor, making the three records an extended concept album. The first album, So Far from Home, was about being lost, while their second, The Light of Things Hoped For, focused on being found. Their third album, entitled Anti-Meridian, about returning home, was released on September 15th, 2008, completing the trilogy and the story of the crew of the U.S.S. Gloria.
Fortress of Solitude
Brave Saint Saturn Lyrics

Of haunting hope
A trailing phantom
Some withering wisp of smoke
Slipping by
And these are my words
Flung through the sky
Trailing red like a cape
On this, their thirteenth try
This prison of mine
Is to carry alone
The light of one red sun
Beneath my skin
And never, ever go home
To watch the ravens fly
So very far, far away
Fortress of solitude
I'll stay here, I'll make you all believe
And if my words have forked no lightning
Never shall I sleep again
With sickening speed
Red hearts on blue sleeves
The bullets of your words
Could scarcely set their teeth into me
Bu I am made frail
In one single bound
My traitorous soul
Stings me so far down
Without a sound
To watch the ravens fly
So very far, far away
Never going to stop, not a break in my stride
Never let this cancer eat from inside
Raise the flag high with fists to the sky
I'll finish this, or this is good-bye
Spies, to the right set their claws to kill me
Lies from the left clasp their jaws on the guilty
I'll break free. I'll break free
Just you watch me
So discouraged,so dismayed
See the poison, dripping from their blades
There is lightning, left in these words
I will still fly, rising with the birds
I have carried the sun in my skin
I cannot stop, I can not win
Forked tongues, forcing me to kneel
As if I was no man made of steel
What if these weak words, that I have tripped on
Sing that I am the last son of Krypton?
I hate you all. I hate you all
This will never sleep
The lyrics to "Fortress of Solitude" by Brave Saint Saturn are a powerful and emotional expression of struggle, perseverance, and resilience. The singer describes themselves as a ghost of haunting hope, an ethereal being with a longing to fly and a desire to escape their prison, and carry the light of a red sun beneath their skin. They are vulnerable to the bullets of others' words but cannot be broken, even if they are made frail in one single bound. They are determined to never stop and never sleep, to rise like the birds and carry the sun in their skin, no matter how weak their words are or how much they hate those who seek to bring them down.
The song is a powerful anthem of hope and determination, with a raw and honest vulnerability that resonates with anyone struggling to overcome their own obstacles. The lyrics are full of vivid imagery, from the trailing red cape of the singer's words to the ravens flying far away. The singer's struggle is also reflected in the musical arrangement, with its soaring melodies and driving rhythms that build and ebb like the tide.

I am the ghost
I am a haunting memory of what once was
Of haunting hope
Of hope that haunts, rather than sustains
A trailing phantom
A lingering apparition that follows without purpose
Some withering wisp of smoke
A fading, insubstantial essence of what was once strong
Slipping by
Passing by unnoticed
And these are my words
And this is what I have to say
Flung through the sky
Sent forth to soar, to be heard
Trailing red like a cape
Leaving behind a mark of passion, of intent
Longing to fly
Dreaming of soaring freely, unrestricted
On this, their thirteenth try
On this, the thirteenth attempt at achieving something great
This prison of mine
This weight that only I can bear
Is to carry alone
Is to bear without support or assistance
The light of one red sun
The fire, the passion, within me
Beneath my skin
At my core, where it cannot be extinguished
And never, ever go home
And never give up, never surrender
To watch the ravens fly
To witness what could have been, far off and unreachable
So very far, far away
So distant, so unattainable
Fortress of solitude
Keeping to myself to prevent further harm
I'll stay here, I'll make you all believe
I will remain steadfast and prove my worth
And if my words have forked no lightning
And if I have failed to inspire or influence
Never shall I sleep again
I will not rest until I succeed
With sickening speed
With nauseating pace, without respite
Red hearts on blue sleeves
Passion on display, exposed without protection
The bullets of your words
The verbal attacks of enemies
Could scarcely set their teeth into me
Could barely hurt me, despite their best efforts
But I am made frail
But I am still human, still vulnerable
In one single bound
All at once, without warning
My traitorous soul
My own internal enemy, my own worst critic
Stings me so far down
Pierces me deeply, to my core
Without a sound
Silently, without any obvious sign of pain
Never going to stop, not a break in my stride
I will not falter, I will not give up
Never let this cancer eat from inside
Never let the poison of others seep into my being
Raise the flag high with fists to the sky
Declare my presence, my worthiness, my resolve
I'll finish this, or this is good-bye
I will succeed, or I will not exist
Spies, to the right set their claws to kill me
Enemies lurk, waiting to strike
Lies from the left clasp their jaws on the guilty
Deceivers surround, waiting to ensnare
I'll break free. I'll break free
I will defy my oppressors and escape their influence
Just you watch me
I will prove you wrong
So discouraged,so dismayed
So disheartened, so disillusioned
See the poison, dripping from their blades
Witness the venomous nature of those who seek to hurt me
There is lightning, left in these words
There is still power, still hope, in what I say
I will still fly, rising with the birds
I will not be grounded, I will not be held back
I have carried the sun in my skin
I have felt the fire within me, and held it close
I cannot stop, I can not win
I cannot give up, even if I do not succeed
Forked tongues, forcing me to kneel
Deceptive words, pushing me down
As if I was no man made of steel
As if I were not strong, as if I were not resilient
What if these weak words, that I have tripped on
What if my own doubts, my own fears, hold me back?
Sing that I am the last son of Krypton?
Proclaiming that I am alone in my struggles
I hate you all. I hate you all
I despise those who seek to harm me, who seek to bring me down
This will never sleep
This will never be forgotten or ignored
