Brave Saint Saturn is an American rock band started as a side project by members of Five Iron Frenzy, a now-defunct Christian ska band. Described by the band as "astro-rock," the music of Brave Saint Saturn (often abbreviated to BS2) is generally more serious than the lighthearted FIF. The group was originally an outlet for Five Iron's frontman, Reese Roper, to explore themes of loneliness and abandonment. BS2 also experimented with more melancholy song composition and ambient sounds, with instruments like synthesizer, glockenspiel, accordion, strings and electronic sampling rounding out the simple, guitar-driven music.
The band's trilogy of albums follow the same outer space-themed story that uses space exploration as an extended metaphor, making the three records an extended concept album. The first album, So Far from Home, was about being lost, while their second, The Light of Things Hoped For, focused on being found. Their third album, entitled Anti-Meridian, about returning home, was released on September 15th, 2008, completing the trilogy and the story of the crew of the U.S.S. Gloria.

Brave Saint Saturn Lyrics

And in other news, the crew of the USS Gloria has at last completed their survey of the planet Saturn and its moons. The crew has been on their mission for almost 5 years now, and they'll begin their return sometime later this week. Personnel at the Kennedy Space Center are eagerly anticipating the end of the trip and expect the return of the astronauts to be sometime next year. It’s easy to think of the planet Mercury when you read the title of this song, but it’s actually about the USS Gloria and its crew’s mission to explore Saturn and its moons. The news announcement at the beginning of the song sets the stage for what’s to come. The crew has been away from earth for almost five years, and people are eagerly waiting for their return. The lyrics then move into reflecting on the enormity of space and the fragility of the human experience. Lead singer Reese Roper contemplates the insignificance of one individual in the grand scheme of things. He compares the vastness of space to the smallness of humans and how quickly life can be taken away. Yet, there’s still a sense of wonder in the lyrics, as if discovering what’s out there is worth the risk. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful things in life come with a level of uncertainty. Overall, “Mercury” is a song that deals with existential themes of life and death, while also exploring the wonder and excitement of exploring the unknown. It’s a reminder that even in the face of the unknown, taking risks and pursuing exploration can lead to some of the most meaningful moments in life.
