Brave Saint Saturn is an American rock band started as a side project by members of Five Iron Frenzy, a now-defunct Christian ska band. Described by the band as "astro-rock," the music of Brave Saint Saturn (often abbreviated to BS2) is generally more serious than the lighthearted FIF. The group was originally an outlet for Five Iron's frontman, Reese Roper, to explore themes of loneliness and abandonment. BS2 also experimented with more melancholy song composition and ambient sounds, with instruments like synthesizer, glockenspiel, accordion, strings and electronic sampling rounding out the simple, guitar-driven music.
The band's trilogy of albums follow the same outer space-themed story that uses space exploration as an extended metaphor, making the three records an extended concept album. The first album, So Far from Home, was about being lost, while their second, The Light of Things Hoped For, focused on being found. Their third album, entitled Anti-Meridian, about returning home, was released on September 15th, 2008, completing the trilogy and the story of the crew of the U.S.S. Gloria.
Through Depths Of Twilight
Brave Saint Saturn Lyrics

Warm yourself by the last breath of the radio
Batteries, are almost gone
Sing goodbye to that old song
Lincoln's words they stare at me
His better angels tear at me
And I believe
The truth will ring through depths of twilight
Liberty, our hearts ignite
Let hope still ring through depths of twilight
Did you hear the thunderous voice of Dr. King?
The ghost of hope still strikes its brilliant lightning
Through the dark our hearts will scream
For a word we've only dreamed
And the past it will decay
So sing goodbye to yesterday
And I believe
The song Through Depths Of Twilight by Brave Saint Saturn is an ode to hope in the midst of despairing times. The opening lines, "Hold your hands to the dying fire's final glow, warm yourself by the last breath of the radio" paint a bleak picture of a world coming to an end. Throughout the song, the theme of endings and decay is personified, with the batteries "almost gone" and the past "decayed." However, the song's refrain, "And we will burn the starless night, the truth will ring through depths of twilight, liberty, our hearts ignite, let hope still ring through depths of twilight" speaks to the hope that still exists in the face of such darkness. It is a call to resilience and to belief in a better future, even when things seem unrelentingly grim.
The song references Abraham Lincoln's "better angels" in the line, "Lincoln's words they stare at me, his better angels tear at me," reminding the listener of the enduring message of unity and hope championed by one of America's greatest leaders. The song also invokes the spirit of Dr. King in the lines, "Did you hear the thunderous voice of Dr. King? The ghost of hope still strikes its brilliant lightning." Like Lincoln, Dr. King is remembered for his message of hope and unity, in the face of the darkness of prejudice and oppression. These historical references help to ground the song's message of hope in the context of America's past struggles and triumphs.
