This video is awesome!!! Thank you; I really like the interactive aspect of it; I'm getting ready to start my own V5 discord game and this is very helpful for my upcoming session 0. Kudos to Fat2mad for this awesome character sheet!

Nerdbert

Just after this I made an interactive clan sheet version. ;)

Thank you! I'm really glad that you enjoyed it! This was a bit of a spur of the moment thing because I hadn't had time to plan my Stockholm by Night workshop, but I'm definitely considering making this a more recurring feature!

I personally like playing specialist characters because having weaknesses is more interesting. You have to find creative ways to turn situations to your benefit when you lack the most obvious skills to solve a problem, and then when you do find that solution, albeit more difficult, you have like 7 dice to roll for your interactions.

I like the Predator Types mechanic as a way to seed backgrounds, but considering almost half of them impose a disadvantage restricting what you can feed on, using either stains or willpower as a cost, it feels a little overly rigid about its boxes, and makes it hard to build a character whose moral outlook on feeding evolves as they grow more uncomfortable with their undead state, since as far as I know, you can't buy off Flaws.

@Collin 100% agreed, the small selection of merits and flaws is probably the biggest issue with V5. Hopefully they add some more in the upcoming player's guide. I'd also like to see some merits and flaws that apply to mortal characters.

Collin

I think part of the problem with predator types is just how few flaws there are in the first place. Which is also especially felt by the fact that flaws are obligatory for each character, rather than a trade-off for more advantages. I like that in principle, because flaws make interesting characters, but the choices are so narrow, and you're already using up some of that narrow space with your predator type granted flaws. It's one thing I'd like to see in a new book, just several pages of new, well conceived flaws and advantages

@Collin I pretty much agree with you, which is one reason why I thought that it was one different subculture that was excluded as opposed to all other subcultures. I thought it was meant to allude to some rival subculture (like fans of two rival sports teams) or a subculture that was politically or philosophically opposed to the one you're in. Prey Exclusion imposes stains which implies a moral issue, and it doesn't make much sense that a Scene Queen who feeds primarily on metalheads would have a moral objection to feeding on hip hop or EDM fans.

IIRC a couple other people who have done V5 character creation videos have treated Scene Queen like the Prey Exclusion applies to one other specific subculture. (Lore by Night, I think?)

But yeah, I think the reason they added a willpower cost to Farmer rather than a Prey Exclusion is because the latter would be far more punishing (not to mention the fact that the feeding style becomes untenable at higher blood potencies unless you get that one Animalism ability). And the benefits you get for Farmer aren't as good as Blood Leech or Consensualist, so they wouldn't justify a punishing Prey Exclusion. I'd imagine few people pick it as is.

Still doesn't explain why Scene Queen gets a Prey Exclusion at all. I agree with the Primogen; Predator types are a great addition but they need some refinement.

The Primogen

There's some really good discussion going on in this thread. I would definitely want more predator types and more flexibility in any rule updates in the future.

Collin

@Jerk chicken, expertly seasoned that reading wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but then having a prey exclusion flaw in this predator type doesn't make much sense. The flaw makes you sustain stains for violating it, so it's a moral exclusion, which makes sense for Consensualist and Blood Leech as those are morally motivated (generally), but Scene Queen seems more opportunistic. And like, under either interpretation, why would someone who feeds on like, metalheads or something, because they fit in with that scene and can easily prey upon people in it, have moral difficulty feeding on non-metalheads?

For that matter, the fact that the feeding flaw that Farmer gives only requires spending willpower to feed on humans is strange, considering it seems like the first thing a vampire with moral hangups about feeding on humans would try to do.

Predator Types could really use a second pass in revision. At least between Alleycat, Bagger, and Sandman you've got some fairly open ended mechanics to build unique spins from, and other people might feel the same way about Cleaver, Osiris and Siren.
