1) Brazzaville was formed by David Brown in 1998 in Los Angeles, California. Since then Brazzaville has recorded an additional 3 albums, Somnambulista, Rouge On Pockmarked Cheeks and Hastings Street. The original version of the band included many musicians, although the core group consisted of Kenny Lyon, Joe Zimmerman, Joel Virgel-Vierset, Mike Bolger and David Ralicke.
The band has toured the east and west coasts of the US as well as playing shows in Europe, Russia and Kazakhstan.
In 2003 David sold everything and moved to Barcelona. There he formed a new version of Brazzaville consisting of himself, two American expatriates (Ivan Knight and Brady Lynch) and two local boys (Paco Jordi and Richie Alvarez). In 2004, Mimicry Records released a greatest hits record called Welcome to Brazzaville. The band's fifth album, East L.A. Broken Dreams
Brazzaville Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Some just want a girl to hold
Some are kind and some are mean
They treat you like a trampoline
And some they want to save your soul
Dawns in motel rooms
Sunday mornings
Pills and alcohol
Lonely truck stops
Bathrooms stalls
Lovers come and lovers go
And life it passes by real slow
Then one day you wake to find
That you're no longer 29
Just an old girl on the stroll
The lyrics of "Broken Dreams" by Brazzaville touch upon the various struggles faced by different individuals in life, and how time passes by quickly without realizing it. The opening lines highlight the diversity in people's desires – some just want love, while others are either kind or cruel. However, no matter how people treat you, it is essential to remember that some people always have an ulterior motive. They want to save your soul, but not out of kindness, rather for their personal gain. The lyrics emphasize that people should be careful, and not everyone who seems friendly is indeed so.
The song then transitions to the various places that people find themselves in as they journey through life. From motel rooms and Sunday mornings to pills and alcohol, truck stops, and bathroom stalls. These situations can either make individuals or break them, often leaving them in a state of loneliness and despair. The next stanza talks about the fleeting nature of human relationships – how people come and go, and life moves on quickly. And in the blink of an eye, one wakes up and realizes they're no longer young, but old and alone.
Overall, "Broken Dreams" is about the endless struggle of life, the ever-changing dynamics of human relationships, and how time passes us by without us realizing it.
