Break Even Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But to us, you were our world
And not a day goes by
That I still don't hear your voice in the wind
That I still don't hear your voice in the wind
And not a day goes by
In a heartbeat, time was taken
And if only I could bring back yesterday
I would know what to say
(What to say, what to say, what to say)
In a heartbeat, time was taken
And if only I could bring back yesterday
I would know what to say
(What to say, what to say, what to say)
As I stare out to sea
I hear your voice on the wind
"There's nothing better than the ones
Who will always be there for you
No matter how far away... they seem to be"
And the boat sails on, the boat sails on and on and on
These lyrics are an emotional tribute to a person who is no longer with us. The singer begins by acknowledging that to the rest of the world, this person may have been just an ordinary individual, but to them, they meant the world. The singer explains that even though this person is no longer physically present, they still feel their presence in the wind, and their voice continues to resonate in their memory. The singer emphasizes how not a day goes by that they don't feel the impact of losing this person.
The second verse reveals that this individual was taken away in a heartbeat, which suggests a sudden and unexpected loss. The singer expresses their regret for not being able to bring back yesterday and to say the things they needed to in that moment. Nevertheless, they continue to hear the voice of the person in the wind, and that voice provides comfort.
The final verse takes place by the sea. The singer hears the voice of the person telling them that true friendship knows no distance. The song ends as the boat sails on and on, with the absence of the individual resonating like the wind, but their memory a constant presence.

Time was taken away abruptly
And if only I could bring back yesterday
If only I could turn back time

While looking out to the sea
I hear your voice on the wind
I hear your voice carried by the wind
