Breaking Benjamin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My hands are broken
And time is going on and on it goes
Forever
(How long?)
So I got high and
Lived all that life had I have taken all
For granted
Promise me you'll try
To leave it all behind
'Cause I've elected hell
Lying to myself
Why have I gone blind?
Live another life

You
You

The only way out
Is letting your guard down and never die
Forgotten
(I know)
Forgive me, my love
I stand here all alone and I can see
The bottom

Promise me you'll try
To leave it all behind
'Cause I've elected hell
Lying to myself
Why have I gone blind?
Live another life

You
You
You
You

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Breaking Benjamin's song, "My hands are broken, And time is going on and on it goes, Forever" creates a sense of desperation and helplessness. The singer seems to be struggling with something and the repetition of the phrase "on and on it goes" suggests that the problem has been going on for a while and shows no signs of stopping. The following line "So I got high and lived all that life had I have taken all for granted" gives us a clue as to what the singer is dealing with. It seems as though they have been living a life of excess and not appreciating what they have. The use of the word 'high' suggests that they have been self-medicating with drugs or alcohol, in order to deal with their problems.

The chorus of the song is a plea for help. The singer asks the person they are singing to, to try and leave all their problems behind and promises that they will do the same. The mention of 'hell' suggests that the singer is dealing with something very serious and that they need the other person's help to get through it. The repetition of the word 'You' at the end of each chorus, makes it clear that the singer is addressing someone specific and that this person is important to them.

The second verse continues to express the singer's desperation, "The only way out is letting your guard down and never die, Forgotten, Forgive me, my love, I stand here all alone, and I can see the bottom." It seems as though the singer has hit rock-bottom and the only way out is to be vulnerable and ask for help. The mention of love suggests that the person they are singing to is someone they care about deeply and that they need their support.
