Fall 2001 brought the release of the band’s debut album, Cannon To A Whisper. Engineered and produced by Mike Fanuele (production manager for Dashboard Confessional), Cannon To A Whisper showcases a band coming into their own with influences ranging from Jeff Buckley and Sunny Day Real Estate to Van Halen and Led Zeppelin. Among the band’s most striking characteristics is the songwriting of singer/guitarist Fred Mascherino. Mascherino, who earned a degree in jazz guitar from Temple University, effortlessly constructs an elaborate interplay of passionate vocals and layers of unique, jazz-infused rock-based guitar. The debut album was heralded for its display of intense dynamics, dramatic crescendos and skilled harmonies. Keeping true to form, the band spent the remainder of 2001 and the majority of 2002 on the road with national touring acts Coheed & Cambria, Further Seems Forever, Hey Mercedes and Recover.
On May 6, 2003, Breaking Pangaea released their latest effort, an ep entitled Phoenix, through Equal Vision Records. Recorded by the production team at Big Blue Meenie Studios (Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, This Day Forward), Breaking Pangaea’s newest offering illustrates a band at the pinnacle of its maturation.
Colors On The Inside
Breaking Pangaea Lyrics

Twenty years ago
I remember every word you said
I remember the times
The promise we made
The reasons you give me to take it away
Colors on the inside
I believed in every you said
I'm not going with you
To the same yesterday
With the promise you're keeping
To take it away
The song "Colors On The Inside" by Breaking Pangaea is a reflective and nostalgic piece that deals with the hardships of a failed relationship. The lyrics are emotional and tell a story of a relationship that was once promising, but has now turned sour. The singer uses the metaphor of colors to describe the changes that have taken place within themselves and within their relationship. The colors on the outside may still be bright and beautiful, but the colors on the inside have faded and lost their luster.
The first verse establishes that the relationship is something that has been going on for a long time, as the singer reminisces about words that were said twenty years ago. This is a significant amount of time, indicating that this relationship has been a significant part of the singer's life. Despite the length of time, the relationship has deteriorated, and the singer feels as though their partner has been taking things away from them. The chorus continues with the use of the colors metaphor, as the "colors on the inside" are now "getting in the way" of the relationship.
The second verse shows some hesitation on the singer's part about staying in the relationship. They remember believing everything that their partner said in the past, but they are now reluctant to go back to the same "yesterday" that they had before. Their partner is promising to make it better, but the singer knows that they have made that same promise before and failed. The song closes with a somber repetition of the first verse.
