Long ago, before the left and right stereo,
This story takes place a long time ago when the world was less binary and less divided into opposing sides.

There was a princess, and a dragon.
The story’s two major characters are a princess and a dragon.

And, well the princess had no idea the dragon was a dragon.
The princess was unaware of the dragon’s true identity.

But, all the while they were pen pals.
Despite their differences, the princess and dragon exchanged letters, forging a friendship.

Uhm, they you know.. the princess didn't know the dragon was a dragon,
The dragon’s penmanship was so good, that the princess was not aware that she was exchanging letters with a dragon.

because the dragon had really good penmanship.

So, written on a scroll, a little torn around the edges with India ink,
The letter was written on a scroll with torn edges and dark ink from India.

You are a princess, and we are pen pals
The dragon addresses the princess and acknowledges their relationship as pen pals.

I am a dragon, but you don't need to know that
The dragon admits their true identity but tells the princess that it's not necessary for her to know.

I've been working on my penmanship
The dragon has been practicing his penmanship to perfection.

By this lantern lit, so this love won't quit
The dragon and princess will continue their pen pal relationship by the light of a lantern.

I am a dragon, and I catapult my love,
The dragon uses the phrase “catapult my love” as an expression of his passion for the princess.

Over the castle wall
The dragon sends his love message soaring over the walls of the castle where the princess resides.

I've gotta tell you something,
The dragon reveals he has a secret to tell the princess.

that I've, never told anyone
The dragon has kept this secret even from his closest confidantes.

I am a dragon,
The dragon once again states his true identity.

I am a dragon, go on,
The dragon wants the story to continue.

Well how can I
The princess is unsure how to proceed in light of the dragon’s true identity.

The dragon asks how it's possible to stop loving someone.

So they gather around my cavern,
An angry mob of people gathers around the dragon’s lair.

Spears and torches, and they sing,
The angry mob is armed with torches and spears and is singing a chant.

So far away, up in the kingdom
The queen of the kingdom is watching the events from a distance.

I can hear the queen, sing
The queen also joins in the chant surrounding the dragon.

Let these words speak
Let your words take the place of your physical presence.

let our eyes never meet
Let your words speak your truth instead of your eyes, which might betray your feelings.

Cause even if you love me
Even acknowledging love for each other may create social consequences.

What would the people think
The princess isn't sure how her subjects would respond if they were to learn of her love for a dragon.

What would they do to you?
The dragon is concerned about the reaction and consequences he himself would face.

They'll just keep fighting
Conflict and disagreement would be the outcome of a discovery of the relationship between the princess and the dragon.

The dragon promises to continue writing to the princess, despite the potential consequences.

Even though I fly through the smoke,
Though he is a dragon, and a fountain of fire and smoke follows him, the dragon has not caused the smoke.

The dragon wants to be sure that the blame isn't put on him for the smoke or the flare.

I might have fire in my throat,
The dragon is a creature of fire, as he breathes fire from his throat.

However, the dragon did not make the flare and wants to make sure that the misdirected blame does not spoil his love for the princess.

I startled you,
The dragon has caused the princess to be startled when she discovered his true nature.

You surprised me.
The princess’s acceptance of the dragon’s true nature surprised the dragon, filling him with hope.

Just knowing you, has made me feel like I can sing.
The dragon is happy just to know the princess, because it fills him with joy and the confidence to sing.
