Walk It Off
Breeders The Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No pursuits in the dusk
And no amusements in the house
Waiting for mercury to fall

All game no plot
Talk it down, walk it off
Trying to get rid of the friends that I've got
Oh mercury
Oh mercury
I've been waiting for a message all night

Now the singer gets laid
And the drummer gets paid
I wait for mercury to fall
Nobody's allowed to fight
'Til the band starts playing tonight

Oh mercury, oh mercury
Oh mercury, oh mercury

Hey your mascara [unknown] in my mouth
Let's go work it out!
Oh mercury
I've been waiting for the message all night

No game no plot
Talk it down, walk it off
Mercury fall

Oh mercury, oh mercury
Oh mercury, oh mercury

Oh mercury, oh mercury
Is falling

Overall Meaning

The Breeders' song "Walk It Off" speaks about a person dealing with loneliness and trying to rid themselves of their current friends. The lyrics start with the line "no pursuits in the dusk" which indicates that the person doesn't have anything to do during that time of the day. The following line "and no amusements in the house" confirms that the person is alone and bored at home. They are waiting for something to happen, the "mercury to fall", which could be interpreted as either the literal falling of temperature or as a metaphor for some sort of change, possibly a change in their current state of loneliness.

The next few lines of the song explain that the singer is simply going through the motions with their social life, with "all game no plot, talk it down, walk it off" meaning that they go out with their friends, but they don't feel a deeper connection, so they try to ignore these feelings and power through them. They then lament that although they have been "waiting for a message all night", nothing has changed for them, the loneliness persists.

Later, the song alludes to the idea that the lead singer's fame and success have given them validation, as they "get laid" and "get paid", but the singer can only wait for their own change in circumstances. Overall, the song speaks about the feeling of loneliness and the search for something to fill that void, whether it be a change of environment or finding better connections with others.
