Her best known hits from her Motown days were the soul ballad Every Little Bit Hurts (which reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. The title of the song was similar to the 60's television public service announcement about highway littering--Every Litter Bit Hurts. After her '64 hit, she recorded, When I'm Gone,which had been recorded by Mary Wells and was intended to be Mary's followup to her '64 mega-hit , My Guy. However, after a contract dispute, Mary Wells left Motown for 20th Century Fox Records. Brenda's version of "When I'm Gone" was a R&B hit, but never crossed over in the days of segragated R&B/Rock & Roll radio.

Holloway did not fit the Motown mold well. She lived in Los Angeles, not Detroit. She also had a grittier edge than the typical polished Motown performer, and wrote songs as well as sang them, which was unprecedented for a female Motown artist. Brenda Hollowy inspired many pop artists, including The Beatles who asked her to perform as the opening act on their 1965 tour of the U.S. She was the only female to open for them.

The word was that she wouldn't give Berry Gordy sex, so she was sent back to Cali and her songs were not promoted. I am 71 years old. Music was a small industry. Everybody knew what was going on behind the scenes.

That's not necessarily true. She just got swept under the Supremes rug like a lot of Motown acts in the late 60s, from Carolyn Crawford, Martha Reeves as well as the The Velvelettes. Just left to dry.

She also brought up that incident,how he would cow down to Diana who as we all know other Motown artist felt the same .She was the star and everyone else had to bow down to her while he gave her as a artist his upmost attention even her group members as she acting like a spoil brat calling Berry when she did not get her way,was jealous of others,insecure about other. His answer to Glady’s was ,he was in love with her during hat time 😮😮. Sadly so many like this great singer Holloway,all beautiful like her .got caught up in this ,his focus on Diana and her success especially other female artist signed to Motown.

To me, Mary Wells and Brenda Holloway were the real female singers at Motown. Listen to them, they have never really even been imitated they are so good. Don't worry about Brenda, she got big dough for Blood Sweat and Tears making a big hit out of the song she co-wrote, "You've Made Me So Very Happy". The young woman is smart and from my generation. I always admired her and she is still in the game I've heard.

Brenda Holloway's always been one of my favorite singers, but until I saw this video I never realized how drop dead gorgeous she was. There are times during this clip where she almost favors (and don't laugh) Rita Hayworth in "Gilda," singing "Put the Blame on Mame." Just a fabulous song by one of Tamla's finest.

I hope that Berry Gordy enjoyed himself, 'cause he cost himself & his company hundreds of millions of dollars .When you get right down to it, Diana Ross was the weakest link in the company! I wish someone could ask Berry Gordy under oath, why the Supremes were the female band of choice, I'd love to hear the answer.

@alexalot23 This performance by her should be a training song for every aspiring female singer out there...if you crank it and really listen, you will be blown away by the way she glides from soft to hard to breathy to churchy and back to soft, with that voice that just makes me melt! I know it may sound ridiculous to say, but this is a masterpiece of singing, just sensational (whether or not you like the song itself). Just never could figure out why she up and disappeared, what a talent.

She was 18 when she cut this record! The best female voice at Motown, or at least tied with Gladys Knight...just listen to this song a couple times, really listen. She just disappeared off the face of the earth shortly after a couple albums, mainly due to the intense pressure she got from Berry Gordy, who was hittin' on her HEAVY, and she was just 18...Motown's first west coast singer.

I always thought she was so "under-rated" in her profession..why? I am not sure, but this Lady had it all, and was so unique in her style. And most of all a very sensual Lady, with the golden voice..sometimes I feel bad for her, because she could have been so big in Motown..she always brings a sentimental tear to my eye with "Every Little Bit Hurts"..noboby will ever duplicate that song, that is Brenda"s song always!!!

Here in the north of England Brenda is rightly regarded as a Soul Goddess. A great talent and sadly underrated but not by the folks who know what soul music is all about.

Ms’ Holloway, especially in her youth, possessed a rare ability to shape a song line by line phrase by phrase to make it uniquely hers. The timbre of her voice so sultry and totally elegant. She need not whoop or holler because she knew this was simply against the grain and nature. The truly gifted do not put on a show but “go with the flow” that makes everything right and good. So much for so many of today’s singers whose egos scream and rant attempting to deflect the stench of vacuous talent. Somebody help me to see my way through the smoke screen, please! pwg

I can't figure out how this song never made it to the radio. I discovered this song through a friend of mine who got the Motwown Disocery. It's one of my all time fav's even if it didn't chart.
