1.) Alfred Jesse Smith (born July 26, 1941 in Shreveport, Louisiana), better known by the stage name Brenton Wood, is an American singer and songwriter, best known for his two 1967 hits: Oogum Boogum Song and Gimme Little Sign.
When he was a child his family moved west to San Pedro in Los Angeles, California. In his high school years his family relocated to nearby Compton, where Brenton became a member of the Compton High School track team and received several awards for his athletic achievements.
Following his high school graduation, Wood enrolled in Compton College. Soon after he took the stage name Brenton Wood, possibly inspired by the wealthy Los Angeles enclave of Brentwood (some sources state that the name is in honor of his "home county"). During his period there his musical interests began to manifest themselves. He was inspired by Jesse Belvin and Sam Cooke, and he began cultivating his songwriting skills, also becoming an accomplished pianist.
After signing with Double Shot Records he had a hit with "The Oogum Boogum Song" in the spring of 1967. It reached number 19 on the R&B charts and number 34 on the pop listing. His biggest hit came in September the same year. "Gimme Little Sign" hit #9 on the pop chart and also #19 on the R&B charts. In the song gimme little sign is not sung, instead the chorus repeats "give me some kind of sign".
"Gimme Little Sign" was later covered by Danielle Brisebois who had a hit with it in 1994. "Gimme Little Sign" was also recorded by Ricky Nelson.
Some of his more unknown songs are also worth listening to, such as "Me and You," "Baby You Got It," and "18 With a Bullet."
Can You Dig It

And your the one and only girl i'd love to take.
Can ya dig it
All i really wanna do is steal away
But i have to be with you so what do you say
Can ya dig it
We could be together alone at last.
Like in that dream we both had in the past
Cant you see us just sitting 'round the fire pace.
Setting such an easy place.
Watching while the snow falls down
Nobody else gonna be around
Tell me cant ya dig it
And in my hide away im gonna get to know you
Its such a fine time to show you how sweet i can be
No baby, i wont tell a living soul where we are
Were gonna cuddle up and fight the cold
Just count the stars.
Can ya dig it
Mmmm
How's about on friday night we catch a plane
Then on sunday afternoon come back by train
Cant ya dig it
Mmm
We could be together alone at last.
Like in that dream we both had in the past
Cant you see us just sitting 'round the fire place.
Setting such an easy pace.
Watching while the snow falls down
Nobody else gonna be around
Come on, tell me, cant ya, dig it.
In Brenton Wood's song Can You Dig It, the singer is talking about a little hideaway by a lake where he wants to take the one and only girl he loves. He asks her if she can "dig it," meaning if she can understand his plan and if she is willing to go with him to this place. The singer wants to steal away with this girl and be alone together in this haven. He talks about how they could sit around a fire, watch the snow, and be the only ones around, just like in a dream they both had in the past.
The chorus repeats the question "Can ya dig it?" which emphasizes the singer's desire to make sure the girl wants to go with him to this place. He then proposes a plan to catch a plane on Friday night and come back on Sunday afternoon by train, suggesting a weekend getaway. The song has a sweet, romantic vibe, with the singer pledging to be sweet to her, to cuddle up and fight the cold, and to count the stars.
The song is about wanting to escape the world and be with the person he loves in a peaceful place. It's about savoring each other's company, being alone without any interruptions, and making memories that will last a lifetime. It's a song about a secret romance, where they hope no one else finds out and wants to be together and alone.
