1.) Alfred Jesse Smith (born July 26, 1941 in Shreveport, Louisiana), better known by the stage name Brenton Wood, is an American singer and songwriter, best known for his two 1967 hits: Oogum Boogum Song and Gimme Little Sign.
When he was a child his family moved west to San Pedro in Los Angeles, California. In his high school years his family relocated to nearby Compton, where Brenton became a member of the Compton High School track team and received several awards for his athletic achievements.
Following his high school graduation, Wood enrolled in Compton College. Soon after he took the stage name Brenton Wood, possibly inspired by the wealthy Los Angeles enclave of Brentwood (some sources state that the name is in honor of his "home county"). During his period there his musical interests began to manifest themselves. He was inspired by Jesse Belvin and Sam Cooke, and he began cultivating his songwriting skills, also becoming an accomplished pianist.
After signing with Double Shot Records he had a hit with "The Oogum Boogum Song" in the spring of 1967. It reached number 19 on the R&B charts and number 34 on the pop listing. His biggest hit came in September the same year. "Gimme Little Sign" hit #9 on the pop chart and also #19 on the R&B charts. In the song gimme little sign is not sung, instead the chorus repeats "give me some kind of sign".
"Gimme Little Sign" was later covered by Danielle Brisebois who had a hit with it in 1994. "Gimme Little Sign" was also recorded by Ricky Nelson.
Some of his more unknown songs are also worth listening to, such as "Me and You," "Baby You Got It," and "18 With a Bullet."

I'm aware this means me battling thru at time seems unfair
Speaking through a box hello toes with a flash light
In search light why are we here
Question marks all in my ass subconscious
So I then turn up on radios Brenton hit the chorus
Do do do three times my homies know-how to
Sure I'll see a tree born reside la born pride
So when I see hue I start off and
Bleed it straight from brain it's so true
Hemingway hematoma leave me alone my poetry needith no help
Someone please same me from one′s self
I don′t belong on a shelf in the dirt I just figured some wealth
Would help everyone everyone see what's
In my heart I can feel it break and beat
For this I choose to make it start off in repeat reapers
Want me weep like bow peep without her sheep
But I′ma RAM God never dammed him
For thinking they just share some genome
Can't start a sentence with and
So why is playing yes and no one the next I can
Almost like apocalyto Calypso me plus miss Gladys Knight
Pulled back the ladice got some
Lettuce who am I kidding I never had this
Whole paragraph in rhyme it′s tight
I think alright whole song in sight
If I don't it′s just alright
Bruce Almighty was Jim Carry or Carrey
But I know he's up their to u its different it
Won't sway me we still the same if u lame Lamentations
Bring the temptations back assemble
Originale that ain′t a word mood change go make me moo chedda
Up out u extruders of Intruders
Noodles in oodles
To a bougie bitch I hope that means same shit I
Thought in my head′s boars Head on top of bread
I'm a fat kid from this occurrence
The blur alphabet born loving my soil
Toil in London broils underoven I am so mclovin
Or get the freak out my ways dyeing daze or day okay
The lyrics of Brenton Wood's song "This Love Is For Real" convey a message of self-awareness and the struggles of battling through hard times that can seem unfair. The artist speaks about the subconscious questioning of why we are here and the search for answers. He refers to the chorus of the song as a sort of anchor that helps him regain his footing and move forward. The line "I can feel it break and beat" speaks to his heart being both broken and resilient at the same time.
The lyrics also contain a sense of self-deprecating humor, with the artist acknowledging his own poetic abilities while simultaneously asking for help. He draws a contrast between his own perceived literary prowess and the wealth that he believes could help others see what's in his heart. The reference to Hemingway and his own "hematoma" serves as another example of wordplay and self-awareness.
Overall, the song is a testament to the complexity and duality of the human experience, with its twists and turns and moments of both joy and pain. The artist's use of language and wordplay adds a layer of depth and humor to the lyrics, making it an engaging and insightful piece of music.
