SUMMER
Brett Anderson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Summer, calls us to feel love, ah ha ha, ah ha ha
Feel love, feel love,
Widows like their wine, coded lines are fine; we are like two jewels, glittering and cruel
Summer, calls us to feel love, ah ha ha, ah ha ha
In sorrow, songs grow, like rainbows
Feel love, feel love, feel love, feel love
The lyrics of Brett Anderson's "Summer" talk about the beauty and cruelty of the season. The first line "Open up your eyes; see the northern lights, blinking like a jewel, glittering and cruel" describes how even the most breathtaking aspects of nature can have a dark side. The metaphorical comparison of the northern lights to a jewel highlights their beauty, while the use of the word "cruel" suggests that there is more than meets the eye.
The second verse "Widows like their wine, coded lines are fine; we are like two jewels, glittering and cruel" talks about how people can be just as beautiful and cruel as nature. The use of the word "widows" implies a loss or absence, and when combined with "coded lines" it suggests that there is a hidden and secretive element to this beauty. The repetition of "glittering and cruel" from the first verse further emphasizes this theme.
The chorus "Summer, calls us to feel love, ah ha ha, ah ha ha / In sorrow, songs grow, like rainbows / Feel love, feel love, feel love, feel love" expresses the power of love even in the face of sorrow. Summer calls us to feel love, and in our darkest moments, songs can grow like rainbows. The repetition of "feel love" reflects the importance of this emotion in the face of the beauty and cruelty of life.
