Ain't No Reason
Brett Dennen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There ain't no reason things are this way
It's how they've always been and they intend to stay
I can't explain why we live this way
We do it every day

Preachers on the podiums speaking of saints
Prophets on the sidewalk begging for change
Old ladies laughing from the fire escape
Cursing my name

I got a basket full of lemons and they all taste the same
A window and a pigeon with a broken wing
You could spend your whole life working for something
Just to have it taken away

People walk around pushing back their debts
Wearing paychecks like necklaces and bracelets
Talking about nothing, not thinking 'bout death
Every little heartbeat, every little breath

People walk a tight rope on a razor's edge
Carrying their hurt and hatred and weapons
It could be a bomb, or a bullet or a pen
Or thought, or a word or a sentence

There ain't no reason things are this way
It's how they always been and they intend to stay
I don't know why I say the things I say
But I say them anyway

But love will come, set me free
Love will come, set me free, I do believe
Love will come, set me free, I know it will
Love will come, set me free, yes

Prison walls still standing tall
Some things never change at all
Keep on building prisons, gonna fill them all
Keep on building bombs, gonna drop them all

Working your fingers bare to the bone
Breaking your back, make you sell your soul
Like a lung, it's filled with cold
Suffocating slow

The wind blows wild and I may move
The politicians lie and I am not fooled
You don't need no razor or a three piece suit
To argue the truth

They air on my skin in the world under my toes
Slavery stitched to the fabric of my clothes
Chaos and commotion wherever I go
Love I try to follow

Love will come, set me free
Love will come, set me free, I do believe
Love will come, set me free, I know it will
Love will come, set me free, yes

There ain't no reason things are this way
It's how they've always been and they intend to stay

I can't explain why we live this way
We do it every day

Overall Meaning

Brett Dennen’s song, Ain't No Reason is a powerful commentary on societal issues and the human condition. The lyrics explore the repeated behaviors and habits of individuals and societies despite them being dysfunctional, unjust or cruel. Dennen questions why people accept things the way they are, whether it's poverty, inequality, violence or injustice. The lyrics describe the pre-existing societal systems that dictate how people should behave, politically, socially and economically, and how they have become internalized by individuals resulting in the perpetuation of this way of living.

The first verse sets the context, where things are the way they have always been, and they intend to stay that way. The mention of "preachers on the podium speaking of saints," "prophets on the sidewalk begging for change," and "old ladies laughing from the fire escape" highlights the contrast between the extremity of belief systems, the greed of some, and the insignificance of others in society. The second verse depicts the internalized nature of living by linking the metaphorical basket of lemons that all taste the same, with the notion of working your whole life for something, only to have it taken away. The tension between society’s expectations and individual aspiration is clear. The third verse creates an image of imbalance, as people walk around carrying their hurt and hatred and weapons, and with every little heartbeat and breath, they are not thinking about death. The climax comes in the chorus where Dennen expresses his hope that love will come and set him free. He enables others to see that love is the way out of their vicious cycle of thinking and behavior, and that it can bring peace and freedom.

@reddwing4368

Why do I keep doing
what I hate
Can t stop it or begin again
Why do I always gotta
Pay
When I see so many are safe
It' makes me feel the hate
Between you and me

But still I'll stand tall and
Take it all cause after all it's just my fate
And time won t wait
Tomorrow s today
Won t stop to take

So I gave up my hope
To all those old ghosts with a single prayer for all of the dead
Cause their home and safe always
I m alone and still So scared of it all

What's my place
In this crazy world
I used to believe in the truth of hope
Would eventually
set me free
But how long can I hold on god please
Take me home
Today

I ll give my last breathe
To save someone who is brand new and worth it all still
I ll pay
I swear I ll pay
Come set me free
Please
I can be of use
I promise you
I promise you

Havent heard this song in like 10 years. I still know the lyrics to it. Great song by a talented artist who deserves way more love than he ever got.

And I swear “Let Her Go” by Passenger was “inspired” by Brett, if not kinda stolen.

@taskforceb3236

I have searched for this song for over a decade and a Facebook group finally lead me here. The image of this guy has popped in my head from time to time over the years and i searched aimlessly for “red head acoustic guitar” but unfortunately or me Ed Sheran had a career. I didn’t remember his name or even what the song sounded like or any words. Feels so good to finally find it again and hey it’s nice tune too!

@bradwinter7293

I've also looked over a decade from an episode of House.

@merwanraiche4523

The fuck, exaclty the same! Even the searching words on Google until his face pops up! Same story same happiness at the end 👌👍

@TheMarcusrobbins

Same thing happened with "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" a cartoon I watched at friends house when I was 9. It moved me, deeply. I couldn't find it anywhere until one day the name just arrived in my head when I was in my 20s. Things arrive when they are ready.
