Needle In The Camel's Eye
Brian Eno Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Those who know
They don't let it show
They just give you one long glance
And you'll go oh, oh, oh, oh.

Goes to show
How winds blow
The weather's fine
And I feel so, so, so, so, so.

Birds of Prey
With too much to say
Oh what could be my destiny
Another rainy day.

Why ask why
For by the by and by,

All mysteries are just more
Needles in the camel's eye

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "Needle In The Camel's Eye" talks about people who know a truth or a fact, but choose to keep it concealed. They won't openly share it with anyone. Their secretive behavior is shown with a single glance, and that is enough to make the listener go oh, oh, oh, oh. This could point to how society could be hiding its truths, and those who know this are discreetly observing it but not openly disclosing it to anyone.

The following verse implies how fleeting life is. It says that the winds of time keep blowing, and the weather is beautiful, but it can change at any time. The line "And I feel so, so, so, so, so" depicts the uncertainty and insecurity of one's current situation, who is enjoying life today, but it might not be the same tomorrow.

The third verse is about people who talk a lot, but what they say is irrelevant. "Birds of prey with too much to say," denotes that much like birds of prey, they watch and observe, but the difference is they talk excessively. The line "Oh what could be my destiny," is questioning what is in store for the future. While "Another rainy day," is a metaphor for unpredictable life events.

The final verse is about the ongoing mystery of life. It says that looking for concrete answers to everything is pointless because they are no more than "needles in the camel's eye." This phrase was inspired by a Hindi proverb that says it's impossible to pass a needle through the eye of a camel. Therefore, it means that some things are just impossible to know or understand, and the mystery of life is one of them.
