Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Brian Kennedy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
How did it feel to be alone?
I was always thinking of games that we could play at
Trying to make the best of my time
But only love can break your heart
Try to be sure right from the start
Yes, only love can break your heart
I have a friend I've never seen
He hides his head inside a dream
Someone should call him and see if he can come out
And try to lose the down that he's found
But only love can break your heart
Try to be sure right from the start
Yes only love can break your heart
What if your world should fall apart?
I have a friend I've never seen
He hides his head inside a dream
Someone should call him and see if he can come out
Try to lose the down that he's found
But only love can break your heart
Try to be sure right from the start
Yes only love can break your heart
What if your world should fall apart?
Yes only love can break your heart
Yes only love can break your heart
Only love can break your heart
Only love can break your heart
The opening lines of the song "When You Were Young and on Your Own/How Did It Feel to Be Alone?" are a reference to the universal experience of loneliness. The lines speak to the feelings of vulnerability and isolation that are often associated with youth. The next few lines, "I Was Always Thinking of Games That We Could Play At/Trying to Make the Best of My Time" demonstrate the singer's resourcefulness and creativity in trying to combat these negative feelings. The chorus then states that "Only Love Can Break Your Heart/Try to Be Sure Right from the Start" which is a sentiment about the dangers of love and the need to be cautious when pursuing it. One of the key messages of the song is that love can be both a powerful force for good and a source of great pain and heartbreak.
The second verse introduces a new character, the singer's "Friend [He's] Never Seen." This person is described as hiding his head inside a dream and being in need of someone to call him out and try to help him. The implied message is that we all know someone like this, who is lost in their own thoughts and in need of a lifeline. The chorus is repeated, emphasizing the idea that only love can break our hearts and that we must be careful when pursuing it.
Overall, "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" is a song about the ups and downs of love and the importance of being cautious when entering into relationships. It is also a song about the universal experience of loneliness and the need for connection with others. The lyrics are simple but profound, and the melody is haunting and memorable.
