Back To The Light
Brian May Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Far, far from the light
Hear the night creatures call
With a cold breath they howl
All the hollow hours
They're calling you

I'll be there
No matter what your going through
In the dark I care
I'm holding on, I'm hoping on
It's still the same old me inside

Back to the light
Back to the streets that are paved with gold
Back to the light
Back to the land where the sunshine heals my soul

Deep, deep in the night
When the world fills with tears
And the wind blows
Colder and colder it grows
And the fire dims
With the same old fears

I'll be there
Though maybe you don't hear me babe
I still care
No matter when, I'll still be there
When you make it to the other side
I'm going back

Back to the light
Back to the light
Back to the streets that are paved with gold
Back to the light
Goin' back to the land
Where the sunshine heals my soul
Yeah, yeah

On and on
Searching for a clearer view
Winning and losing an inner war
Wonder what we do it for
Though the road seems never ending
Hold on to the hope I'm sending through
Yeah

No matter what your going through
In the dark I care
I'm holding on, believe it
We'll be walking in the light
'Cause they'll be no place left to hide

Back to the light
Back to the streets that are paved with gold
Back to the light
Yeah, I'm goin' back to land
Where the sunshine heals my soul
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Back to the light

Back to the light (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Back to the light

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song "Back to the Light" are a powerful allegory about hope and surviving difficult times. The idea of being "far from the light" suggests a state of emotional and spiritual darkness, and the "night creatures" and "cold breath" symbolize the fears and doubts that haunt us. However, the chorus brings a message of encouragement and perseverance: the singer promises to be there for someone, to care and to hold on, and to go "back to the light" and the "streets that are paved with gold" which are metaphors for better times and happiness.

The second verse describes the challenges of life, the tears and the fears, but the promise of support and care remains strong. The repetition of the chorus reinforces the idea of hope and optimism, and the line "No matter when, I'll still be there when you make it to the other side" is particularly touching and inspiring. The final lines, "We'll be walking in the light 'Cause they'll be no place left to hide," suggest a future where the light triumphs over darkness, and where connections and support lead to healing.

I was skeptical, but tbh once it got going I actually got a little choked up. I think when you consider that the song war written at a time when Brian was very depressed, watching an older Brian who has come through the other side on stage with his younger self is super poignant. Much love ❤
