Embracing an effortless eloquence and cocoa butter smooth persona, the music of Brian McKnight has defined the true meaning of an American soul-man since 1991. Like his spiritual Motown godfathers, this upstate New York native has a velvety voice and silky style that captures the vibe of vintage soul without being old fashion. On his latest disc Ten, that blend can be clearly heard.
While Brian’s aspirations might have seemed like a lofty ambition, the longevity of his career is a testament to the purity of his vision. With the release of Ten, McKnight’s first disc for his new label Warner Bros Records, the Grammy-nominated singer could not be more pleased with the outcome. Without a doubt, the landscape of soul music has gotten younger, but that fact did not hinder McKnight’s creative process.
After 16 million albums sold since his self-titled debut, it would have been too easy for McKnight to simply follow the R&B template of rote romanticism. But on Ten, the artist in him felt the need to be more revealing. Though McKnight has been friends with producers Tim & Bob for over ten years, this is the trio’s first collaboration.
Though Brian has never been the kind of singer/songwriter that one would call political that didn’t stop him from penning “Red, White & Blue,” a heart wrenching ode for the men and women currently at war, teaming up with country star Rascal Flatts.
Currently working on a variety of projects including a talk show and soundtracks for two upcoming Tyler Perry projects, the veteran soul singer could not be happier with the outcome of Ten. For fans of real music, Ten is the perfect addition to the soul cannon.
Get Over You

Every time you called
Should've Given you everything
Given you my all
But I was just selfish
Thinkin' Bout myself
Should've Given the best of me to nobody else
'Cause There's no livin' without you
And it feels like I'm losin' my mind
Baby I
Can't sleep at night
Without you
Right by my side
My pride always gets in the way
I lied
I should have begged you to stay
It may take 'Til forever is through
To get over you
Should've made you happy
Should've been strong
Should've made you believe
You were right where you belonged
Don't know what you got
'Til it's gone
Don't tell me it's too late
To right this wrong
'Cause there's no living without you
And it feels like I'm losin' my mind
Baby I
Can't sleep at night
Without you
Right by my side
My pride always gets in the way
I lied
I should have begged you to stay
It may take till forever is through
To get over you
Somethin'
Somethin' ain't right
Girl Lately
My sun doesn't shine
Wont you come back into my life?
Girl can we try
Again
Baby I
Can't sleep at night
Without you
Right by my side
My pride always gets in the way
I lied
I should have begged you to stay
It make take till forever is through
To get over you
The lyrics of the song "Get Over You" by Brian McKnight depicts the pain of a breakup and the regret that follows. McKnight talks about how he should have given his all to his lover but was selfish and only thought about himself. He reflects on his mistake and acknowledges that he should have made his lover happy and given her everything she deserved. McKnight later confesses that he can't sleep at night without his lover by his side and his pride always got in the way, causing him to lie instead of begging her to stay. He admits that he'll take forever to get over her, and he wishes he could go back to when things were right, and they were still together.
The lyrics paint a picture of regret and the realization that one has lost the one they loved. McKnight's sorrowful delivery helps to convey the emotion behind the lyrics truly. The line, "Don't know what you got 'til it's gone," is a reflection on how people tend to take things or people for granted until they are no longer in their life. The song shows the pain of losing someone you love entirely and how it can take years to get over the loss.
