Melo was born in the East End of Hamilton, Ontario, to Maria and Augusto Melo, immigrants from São Miguel, Portugal. He professionally trained vocals at the Royans School for the Musical Performing Arts, which also featured Rock Star Supernova winner Lukas Rossi and Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida. He also volunteered to help in recording vocal harmonies with some of the school's students.
At the time of his Idol audition, he was still living in Hamilton working as a construction worker. He had auditioned in previous seasons but had not made it past the judges. In 2007 he was encouraged by his best friend and brother to try again in Toronto. His was the first audition shown in the television broadcast.
The judges praised Melo for his emotional performances and his command of the stage. After his performance of Karma Police by Radiohead in the Top 5 episode, the audience and judges gave him a standing ovation, with Jake Gold remarking, "I just hope the people at home understand what they just saw. Its one of the most magical moments ever on this show." Zack Werner added, "Your parents must be proud, they might have a son who is the next Canadian Idol."
On September 11, 2007, Melo won Canadian Idol, despite having been considered the "dark horse" at the start of the competition, and having landed in the Bottom 2 twice. He beat Jaydee Bixby for the title.
His first single, "All I Ever Wanted", was released at 12:00 AM on September 13, 2007. The song is also featured on his first album, Livin' It, released November 27, 2007.
Obvious
Brian Melo Lyrics

You hid 'em for a rainy day
Let them out
Break the lock right off the safe
Don't you know
You don't have to be afraid
You're unsure
Baby that's okay
[Chorus]
Just a look from you is a saving grace
All the questions start to fade away
Cause the answer's written on your face
Oh it's obvious to me
It's obvious to me
If I could
Do the same for you I would
'Cause you keep falling in and out of love
I know your heart
Better than you know yourself
Give it time
It'll come around
[Chorus]
Just a look from you is a saving grace
All the questions start to fade away
Cause the answer's written on your face
Oh it's obvious to me
Are you still that girl in the photograph?
With me right there by your side
Was it just a dream we used to have
Or is it still, still alive
[Chorus]
Ya it's obvious to me
Oh it's obvious to me
The lyrics of Brian Melo's song "Obvious" explore the theme of uncertainty and insecurity in love. The song's protagonist is talking to their loved one who is uncertain about their feelings and is prone to falling in and out of love. The singer reassures the loved one by telling them that they don't have to be afraid of uncertainty and that their hesitation is okay. They encourage the loved one to express their feelings openly and boldly by saying that the answer is written on their face and they shouldn't hesitate to break the lock on the safe and reveal their thoughts.
The chorus talks about the singer's unwavering faith in the loved one's love for them. They say that just a look from the loved one is enough to erase all questions and doubts and they know that the answer is obvious to them. They also express their wish to reciprocate the love they receive and know the loved one's heart better than they know themselves. The final verse talks about the past and memory, where the singer asks if the girl in the old photograph still exists, and if their love is still alive.
Overall, the song is a reflection of the complexities and insecurities of love and the need for open communication and reassurance in a relationship.
