Born to an American international banker father and a Scottish mother, Bria… Read Full Bio ↴Born to an American international banker father and a Scottish mother, Brian Molko's family moved frequently during his childhood, including spells in Scotland, Liberia, Lebanon and Luxembourg. Molko has referred to his mother's home town of Dundee, Scotland as "where I grew up". He attended Goldsmiths College in London, where he studied drama. He describes his childhood as a period when he felt very lonely and alienated. He started to wear make-up at the age of 11. He was an actor in a school drama theater.

While Molko was brought up in a strict household that disapproved of artistic expression (his father wanted him to become a banker) he rebelled by affecting an androgynous image, wearing nail polish, lipstick and eyeliner, and listening to punk and glam rock. In his late teens, he came out as bisexual.

Molko and Stefan Olsdal both attended the International School of Luxembourg in Luxembourg, but they were never friends. When Molko moved to London to study drama at Goldsmiths College, where he graduated with a degree, he met Olsdal at South Kensington Tube Station. Molko invited Olsdal to one of his gigs in a club, which he played with Steve Hewitt. Olsdal was impressed with Molko's voice, and together they formed Ashtray Heart; eventually they changed the name to Placebo. Together with drummer Robert Schultzberg (a friend of Olsdal's from Sweden) performed together in 1996. Schultzberg did not fit in the band, however, and was soon replaced with Steve Hewitt, who played on Placebo's demo tracks.

Molko's musical influences include David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Nick Drake, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joy Division, The Cure and The Pixies. Molko taught himself to play guitar. At the age of 16 he got a Telecaster replica as a present from his parents. Soon After, he bought a real telecaster. He plays other instruments such as bass, harmonica, keyboard, saxophone, drums and turntables. Occasionally, Molko works as a disc jockey at clubs, he's definately not very good at it. Nowadays Molko listens to electro-clash artist Peaches, his old favourite, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and many others.

Along with Hewitt and Olsdal, he had a small role in the 1998 film Velvet Goldmine, for which Placebo performed the T. Rex song 20th Century Boy. He played Malcolm, a singer of the fictional glam rock band, The Flaming Creatures.

In 2005, Molko's long-term partner, Helena Berg, gave birth to his first child, Cody. He said he named the child after his long-time friend who died in a car accident.

He has performed as a guest vocalist on tracks by:

He also wrote the English lyrics to 'Pink water' version 3, a song by Indochine from the album that is due to be released at the end of 2006. Molko is friends with David Bowie, with whom he sang Placebo's Without You I'm Nothing and 20th Century Boy live. He has used a Fender Jaguar, Fender Thinline Telecaster, Gibson SG in the past and currently plays Gretsch guitars .

He lives in London but frequently travels to Paris.

The April 17th, 2007 Placebo show in Omaha, Nebraska, at the Sokol Auditorium was canceled after Molko was rushed to the emergency room after fighting flu symptoms for a number of days. The band has promised to re-schedule that show near the end of the summer.

The girl who introduced me to this band changed my life in many ways. I was 19 and she was 28, and she and I were lovers and it was wonderful. We strictly adhered to a "friends with benefits only" arrangement and I was perfectly fine with it. Being my age I had no interest in settling down, I wouldn't realise how much it meant to me until now, almost 10 years later. I never even asked myself why I let an "I love you" slip when drunk with her. Now we are hours and hours away from each other and haven't spoken in many years. I wish we could have seen where things would have gone. Rae, if you can read this, you still "come on like special k" to me, and I hope wherever you are, you are happy and loved. it was for the best. the older you get the less you have in common. she will be thinking wills and aarp going through menopause and you will be 40 wanting to have fun still. but seriously, one day you will look back at a 19 year old and want to strangle them and think man, was I that annoying at that age? then you'll realize why she took off so to speak.. if you met now, it could probably work. but you were far too young to land a 30 year old woman. she only had 5 or 6 years left to have kids.

This song's a masterpiece indeed. I can't get why they realized that stupid video, it truly damages this awesome tune, such as a shortage and you never find out a knot between this shots and the real meaning of the song they wrote. I feel so proud of declaring my fondness for their music. Although they're not as kind and fair as men they made up a marvelous and stout term of alternative music. Recently they turned a new vibe like they decided to run into some new styles but getting out of their classical fulfilling brand; they might have definitely lost a considerable chunk of their addicts, but when you vary your job you have to be aware about the way you get and the related risks, though. For the record, I afford listening to their latest album despite my preference's towards the work run up to Meds; in the meanwhile they clearly attempted to take electronic sounds into their music, but over a commercial line. The mark drawed at that time makes me regret the band I relied on.

Placebo are one of the few bands I've never gone off... I've liked them from an early festival appearance where they were described as "Anglo / Swedish narco rock" and that intrigued me... They had no product out (in UK)... I've loved them since.....

To me "no escape from gravity" means that no matter how much you try to steer your life or fix a problem theres no escape from gravity. Gravity is a fact. Ive had mental health issues since i turned 21. And the more i tried to ignore it the worst it got. I cant escape it. But ive been finnaly going to Therapy. And have accepted as a fact. Faced my trauma and am doing alot better now compared to before. Gravity is real. But self love is the first step in accepting who you are and what you cant change. I hope you all find the peace of mind you deserve. :)

This might be just within my interpretation of the song, but the line of "can this savior be for real, or are you just my seventh seal" makes me feel completely devastated. The thought of keeping hope for someone or something to come and save you from the mess all around you instead of acknowledging that you only have yourself and your will to move forward perpetuates self harm and sabotaging tendencies, and a general everlasting sense of despair.
I'm probably completely off of Brian's meaning and instead getting personal, but that's how I feel as a bipolar and addict listening to the song.

special k is the savior, as in ketamine. can all of those allucinations be real or are they just that.... allucinations?
special k works like LSD, so the trip is somewhat similar, but what you experience can be real, or not....

This song is about ketamine, when they played it at Sanremo, the cheesy and conservative italian song contest, the public booed them and in response Molko showed the finger and throw away the guitar, great band

I'm Italian too, but i'll write English in order to let everybody understand: lil time ago i saw here on You Tube the video of Placebo performing in our fucked up national "top" musical event. I've been particularly impressed by a fat, sly guy in the public, a pig in a suite, grunting some insult to the band, or personally to Molko, and it reminded me one more time how low are the levels reached by our once ingenious country, the "cradle of saints and poets", land of inventors and stylists, heroes and high grade soccer players, with the best sex and best food in the world - now, a shithole full of dickheads, also thanks to various foreigner interests - without denying our own responsabilities. I'm not a nationalist, but i love my country, and it feels my heart of bitterness. And in general, seeing a great potential being flushed down the drain is an insult to Life Herself!!! Be well, dear compatriot.

When they came to the festival of Sanremo, the public didn't appreciate the Placebo, because of the reaction of the singer, after the esibition of "Special K", who started to hurt his guitar against an acustic speaker, with a lot of violence.
Indipendently of the exibition of Sanremo, this Song is very funny 😉😉😉

I saw that episode in Sanremo and I thought that Molko war right, it is terrible to play good music in front of the wrong audience, but maybe he should just laugh in front of them and be like Dante: Non ti curar di loro ma guarda e passa! (tanto erano palesemente tutti ignavi). Anyway... Great song! ;-)

Ah the innocence of youth. I remember when this came out and I had no knowledge of Ketamine. The only special K I knew about was the cereal. It was many moons later I was introduced to K, and finally got the song.

I still liked it, just didn't understand the subtext at the time, in the same way I didn't understand the subtext of Suedes' "Animal Nitrate" until later on in my life.

PS: I was in my 20s when this came out.
