I'm a gonna raise a holler
Bout workin' all summer just to try to earn a dollar
Well the time to go on baby tryin' to get a date
Boss says no date son you gotta work late
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a gonna do
But their ain't no cure for the summertime blues
Well my mom and pop told me son you gotta make some money
Well I didn't go to work told the boss I was sick
Now you can't use the car cause you didn't work a lick
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a gonna do
But their ain't no cure for the summertime blues
Gonna take two weeks gonna have a fine vacation
Gonna take my problem to the United Nation
Well I called my congress man and he said quote
I would like to help ya son but you're to young to vote
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a gonna do
But their ain't no cure for the summertime blues
The lyrics to Brian Setzer's song Summertime Blues tell the familiar story of a teenager who is frustrated with the demands of working during the summer. The lyrics express a sense of rebellion against the work ethic imposed by the boss and an unsuccessful attempt at achieving liberation by lying to the boss about being sick. The lyrics also express the frustration of not being able to use the car, which is a symbol of freedom and independence.
The lyrics illustrate a theme of youthful rebellion, where the singer is caught between the expectations of society, as represented by the authority of the boss, and his desire to enjoy the fleeting moments of summer. The lyrics also express a sense of helplessness, as the singer seeks help from his parents, his congress man, and ultimately the United Nations. The lyrics conclude with the singer resigned to the fact that there is no cure for the summertime blues.
In summary, the lyrics to Summertime Blues are a reflection of the cultural milieu of the 1950s, where rock and roll was born, and teenage rebellion against authority was a central theme. The lyrics are a celebration of the spirit of youthful rebellion and the quest for freedom and independence.

I'm gonna raise a fuss, I'm gonna raise a holler
About a-workin' all summer just to try to earn a dollar

Well, my mom and pop told me, "son, you gotta make some money"
If you want to use the car to go ridin' next Sunday
Well, I didn't go to work, told the boss I was sick
"Well, you can't use the car 'cause you didn't work a lick"
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a gonna do
But there ain't no cure for the summertime blues
I'm gonna take two weeks, gonna have a fine vacation
I'm gonna take my problem to the United Nations
Well, I called my congressman and he said "whoa!"
