All By Myself
Bridget Jones' Diary Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was young
I never needed anyone
And makin' love was just for fun
Those days are gone

Livin' alone
I think of all the friends I've known
But when I dial the telephone
Nobody's home

All by myself
Don't wanna be
All by myself, anymore

Hard to be sure
Sometimes I feel so insecure
And love, so distant and obscure
Remains the cure

All by myself
Don't wanna be
All by myself, anymore

All by myself
I don't wanna live
All by myself, anymore

When I was young
I never needed anyone
And makin' love was just for fun
Those days are gone

All by myself
Don't wanna be
All by myself, anymore

All by myself
Don't wanna be

Don't wanna live by myself
By myself anymore

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "All by myself" by Bridget Jones' Diary are about the feeling of loneliness and isolation that can come with being single and not having someone to share your life with. The song begins with the singer reminiscing about the days when they were young and carefree, and didn't need anyone else in their life. The idea of love was just something fun and frivolous, not a serious matter. But now, as they are living alone, they can't shake the feeling of all the people they have known, but when they reach out, no one is there to answer.

The chorus then brings us to the heart of the matter, as the singer emphasizes their desire not to be alone anymore. They feel insecure and uncertain about love, but believe that it is the cure to their loneliness. They are tired of living all by themselves and long for the companionship and intimacy that they have been missing. Finally, they express the sentiment that they don't want to live by themselves anymore, and that being alone is something that they can no longer bear.

Overall, "All by myself" is a poignant and relatable song about the universal human need for connection and companionship. It captures the feeling of isolation that many people experience, even in the midst of a bustling city or a busy social life. The lyrics are simple yet powerful, and speak to a deep emotional truth that resonates with many people.

Bridget has to be the most relatable character ever created, especially for women.

and for men

@laminage

I know right. I wonder what Celine Dion thought of this scene as well as Eric Carmen who wrote the Song. Also another person who was good at imitating Celine Dion was UK Soap Actress Emma Atkins who sang like Celine. She has a terrific sense of Humour when she bought the lady who "imitated" her on Saturday Night Life to one of her shows.

@@laminage Or Jamie O'Neil who is singing here. :-)

I remember watching this as a kid thinking this wasn't possible..like it had to get better, now the only unrealistic part of this movie is Bridget being able to afford her flat in Central London on a secretary's wage 🤣

@jessicabhatnagar9405

She wasn’t a secretary though? She was working in publishing but could be well paid as it’s London and she has a university degree.

@itsmagdalenaaa

This was 2001, mind you. Even things were more affordable for the average person back then. Plus she was working in publishing

@tariqlear5172

It would have to be very well paid!@@jessicabhatnagar9405
