Hantu Utan, as I heard it from the villagers, is a spirit that some people in this area believe in. The legend says it is an Orangutan that once came out of the forest and kidnapped a village woman. The Orangutan and the woman had a male child which was half human &half ape. He grew up, became chief of the woman's village. Later, the chief dies but his spirit lives on as a guardian angel of sorts to the villagers. And that is the thing they call Hantu Utan. Hope that helps! Bill

Thanks for your thoughts. It may be obvious to you that nature is not benevolent, but there are too many examples out there of people who think nature is warm and fuzzy. Check out Werner Herzog's movie 'Grizzly Man' as a prime example. My tale is a reminder that nature is really a orgy or murder and nature lovers should remember that.

My interest is in the idealistic young ecologists and animal conservationists like Digman (who the story is about). Many of them have this Disney like perception of nature that is too idealistic. And that can be dangerous. An essay comparing animal savagery vs. human savagery, while interesting, isn't what I was writing about. Did you read the story?

well there was that movie "Grizzly Man" which typifies many people's belief that nature is warm and fuzzy only to find out too late that it is murderous and without conscience. As I warn to those reading the story, "if you hope to be appreciated for protecting nature, understand you will be appreciated more for your flesh than your deeds." If it saves one person from making the same mistake made by the man in Grizzy Man, then it was worth the crap I put up with here.

Dude it's really amazing that the snake was even capable of holding that amount of prey in its stomache, if they didn't cut the snake open then no one would've knew about this, people would have a missing person, probally with family, lost and nothing know about his death, if that snake had the chance he'd kill any of them, no remorse.

Digman was never found. The family hired a local witchdoctor. The witchdoctor told them digman had been taken by the mighty Hantu Utan, an Orangutan spirit that lives in the forest. The witchdoctor said their son was being used to create a half human, half orangutan baby and would return when the child was born.

That photo of a dead snake is similar to the one from another article where they were clearing off a jungle and accidentally killed a hibernating snake. They were a pair of really large snakes. The surviving one fled. None of the workers wanted to return and finish the job.

I never realized this until I started meeting alot of local breeders and attending reptile shows but, you'd be surprised of the amount of snakes or huge monitors that people are breeding or keeping as pets that you never see, but ALOT closer than what you had thought.

I'm not scared of snakes. I had five pet snakes for awhile, including a 10 foot long coastal carpet python. She was such a beauty! Snakes are awesome. I think most people are terrified of snakes because they don't understand them and don't bother to try to educate themselves since they don't see it as important to overcome their fear, since it doesn't get challenged very often. I have to admit that I was terrified of wasps until I started reading up on them.

Curious is that I listened same history from Amazon natives, 30 years ago. The security guard was working for a miner company, Vale do Rio Doce, at Projeto Carajás. The security team felt missing a guard that left for swiming in a little river and did not came back at night. The team went looking for, they found a giant snake (sucuri or jibóia, I don't remember) at the river and killing her they found broken human bones inside her. Curious seeing same history here now, far away...

That's cool, man... you obviously were smart enough to know that garter snakes aren't a danger to us, which is common fact, and act with that knowledge instead of going into a fit over a snake being around. When I was a kid, my parents would take me and by brother to these snake pits where garter snakes would hibernate. You could pick up handfuls of them and wear them like clothes because they were in torpor and unresponsive. It was awesome.

There was a snake found in Indonesia 49 feet, almost a 1000 pounds. It was still alive when photographed and there is live footage as well. No one knows how big some of these snakes can get if left alone and fed properly.

If I ever lived someplace like this, or visited, I will a steel vest and neck collar with sharp spikes, and tanks attached to my arms. Or cannons. Just something to feel safe. But I think the largest snakes recorded can only reach 30 ft. However, those reticulated pythons don't really stop growing, unless something kills them.

This security guard was either extremely small or that snake was unnaturally large. It's nearly impossible for a snake, even a huge python, to get it's jaws around a human beings shoulders.

I thought this was impossible. The longest snake in record was a reticulated python (IDK about spelling), and that was 40 something feet long. Yet in this video the python is 50 feet. But this seems real enough.

LOL that's totally what we did! You could also wear them like a cape off your shoulders and arms. It was so weird because there were tiny little skinny snakes and these gigantic thick monsters all in a huge pile. LOLOL are you serious about your friend? If so, that snake fucking wins the last level of snakedom. That is a kickass snake. I have a pet ball python now, but a few years ago, I had five snakes. I miss them :(. Had to give them away because our house's heat was whacky.

Look at the image of the python on the 'crane'. It is clearly hanging off the bucket of an excavator which is in the foreground. The python is only 8 feet long or so.

I know right, depending on the size of the kill, Pythons might even go up to a year without eating. I wonder if Anacondas can do the same thing ? They are much larger than Pythons.

How can you know? Doubtless serpents grew larger in times past. There's always a chance a particularly huge one has not been caught & killed, enabling it to grow larger than hitherto thought possible. Nothing about the article or photograph led me to question their authenticity. I did see either photos or video footage about 3 years ago of a python in excess of 50 feet in length caught somewhere, possibly the Philippines. I'd previously thought anacondas were largest at up to 'only' 40 feet.

No, this is a real species. It's a Reticulated Python, the longest species of snake in the world. It trades off between two species as which is the 'largest' snake, because Green Anacondas are incredibly heavy, but Reticulated Pythons get longer. The Reticulated in the video was found to have human remains in its stomach, however the actual attack was not documented.

its true about what the witchdoctor said, i mean in south east asia, black magic in strong, normal people have the ability to even curse a rival by "throwing" spirits. and when i mean normal people, really normal people. our forests are full of spirits and ghosts. a friend of mine almost got lost because a spirit "teleported" him to a cave in malaysia while sleeping with the rest of his group. lucky for him, the search and rescue team was very quick.

Titanoboa could reach lengths of 48-56ft in length and an Anaconda could, under the right conditions, grow to such lengths as well.

Thanks for the civil comment. I just think the killing of any life form is harsh and goes against my morals. Only time when its okay to kill is when its self-defense and that goes for any living thing. I just can't stand people who abuse and kill animals and think its okay because to them their not at the same level as humans.That's a very anthropentric view I believe most animals are innocent/precious and shouldn't be subjected to the sadistic horrors that humans tend to inflict on other humans
