N03 Trees Get Wheeled Away
Bright Eyes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Anchormen spike their blood, wear masks of mud
Cucumbers cut to fit their eyes
And so no one would know how tired they've grown
Of talking and telling their lies

While your TV's change stations, scroll messages
Victims and Christians both drinking blood
And they'll pray for the destruction of all hatred
More often, just those with hate for us

'Cause it hurts when you discover one's worse and one's better
To suffer or cause others to
And you can live by your conscience, now guilt is a concept
You're no longer subscribing to

There's a virgin in my bed
And she's taking off her dress
And I'm not sure what I am gonna do

There's a song stuck in my head
And I can't help singing it
Oh, how I hope my singing pleases you
'Cause this is not who I've become but what you make me into

Oh, we got no health insurance, no cellular service
No disease, they can't cure
But we need more money to burn
So each person must learn the dollar amount they are worth

And those pills make me dizzy forgetting my body
I watch as it walks away
And I just keep drinking the poison and smoking the cartons
A pack and a half a day

So when time comes to claim me
My friends and my family will gather around my grave
And they'll believe that they knew me
And loved me and missed me, and all call me by my name

So imagine what you want
And then hold on to that thought
'Cause that's as close as it will ever come

And believe you're where you are
Keep acting out the part
But at the end of the day, the trees all get wheeled away
And you'll be standing alone in a blank, blank space

So believe you're who you are and stay in character

But at the end of the play, the audience walks away
And I'll be shivering cold on a well lit stage

Overall Meaning

The song "Trees Get Wheeled Away" by Bright Eyes is a poignant commentary on the disillusionment that individuals can feel with the world around them. The lyrics describe a world in which people have become tired of speaking and being lied to, and are instead choosing to wear masks to hide their exhaustion. The song paints a picture of a society in which people are obsessed with their television screens, scrolling through messages of violence and hatred while praying for the destruction of their enemies. The chorus encourages the listener to hold on to their sense of self and belief in who they are, but acknowledges that, in the end, everyone is just a small piece of something much larger.

The song continues with an introspective verse about the individual's struggle to maintain their own identity in a world that constantly tries to define them. The singer describes finding themselves in a compromising situation with a woman and feeling conflicted about who they've become in that moment. The lyrics suggest that the singer is aware that their actions may be harmful to others, but they feel trapped by the expectations placed upon them.

The final verse serves as a reminder that, in the grand scheme of things, each person's individual struggles and triumphs are ultimately insignificant. The song acknowledges that people can attempt to maintain their sense of self and their own values, but ultimately they will end up on a cold, empty stage as the "trees get wheeled away."

Overall, "Trees Get Wheeled Away" is a powerful commentary on the difficulties of maintaining a sense of self and individuality in a world that constantly tries to define us. It's a poignant reminder that, in the end, each of us is just a small part of something much larger.

Lyrics:

I can't seem to focus
And you don't seem to notice
I'm not here
I'm just a mirror
You check your complexion
To find your reflection's all alone
I had to go

Can't you hear me?
I'm not comin' home
Do you understand?
I've changed my plans

'Cause I, I'm in love
With my future
Can't wait to meet her
And I, I'm in love
But not with anybody else
Just wanna get to know myself

I know supposedly I'm lonely now (lonely now)
Know I'm supposed to be unhappy
Without someone (someone)
But aren't I someone? (Aren't I someone? Yeah)
I'd (I'd) like to be your answer (be your answer)
'Cause you're so handsome (you're so handsome)

But I know better
Than to drive you home
'Cause you'd invite me in
And I'd be yours again

But I, I'm in love (love, love, love, love)
With my future
And you don't know her
And I, I'm in love (love, love)
But not with anybody here
I'll see you in a couple years

@LovelySingsyt

Man, it's been 2 years already and this song means so much to me.

I mostly protray this song to my anxiety or depression. When she says " I know better than to drive you home, cause you'll invite me in, and I'll be yours again." To me I feel I know better not keep feeling anxious or sad but It's like a invitation that's always open even if u don't want it. Then the "I'll be yours again" it's back to the loop of feeling like crap.

But my favorite is probably everyone's but when she says "I'm in love, with my future." Some people with anxiety tend to worry about the future. Her song makes me want to not worry anymore but to love what's to come to the future.

The last part as well is relatable, "I'm in love, but not with anybody here, I'll see you in a couple years." To me it feels like I'm in love what's to come and it's not just someone im with or whatever it's you and only you, sometimes it takes time for people to heal, which is the "couple years". Part and it's like telling ur future self, it's hard now but you'll feel better soon.

I'm sorry this was long but I just love billie and her music. Her music helped me go through a lot and I know she has meaning to some of her music but I think she said once that she wants her fans to just feel what it feels like to us. I'm really happy I found out about her in 2015. Love seeing her grow and being a beautiful human being that she is ❤
