Bright Eyes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is it a kind of dream
Floating out on the tide
Following the river of death downstream
Oh, is it a dream?

There's a fog along the horizon
A strange glow in the sky
And nobody seems to know where you go
And what does it mean
Oh, is it a dream?

Bright eyes, burning like fire
Bright eyes, how can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes

Is it a kind of shadow
Reaching into the night
Wandering over the hills unseen
Or is it a dream?

There's a high wind in the trees
A cold sound in the air
And nobody ever knows when you go
And where do you start
Oh, into the dark

Bright eyes, burning like fire
Bright eyes, how can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes

Bright eyes, burning like fire
Bright eyes, how can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly

Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes

Overall Meaning

"Bright Eyes" by Bright Eyes is a song that seems to be questioning the nature of life, death, and dreams. The song starts with the singer asking whether what he is experiencing is a dream, floating out on the tide, following the river of death downstream. He is unsure about what is happening, and the fog on the horizon and the strange glow in the sky only add to the mystery. The singer then sees "Bright Eyes," and the bright light that used to burn so intensely suddenly burns pale. The singer is left wondering how something that was so bright and alive can disappear so suddenly.

The second verse seems to continue with the questioning of life, death, and dreams. The singer ponders over whether the shadow he sees is real or just part of a dream. He sees a high wind in the trees and feels a cold sound in the air, and again he is left wondering where all of this is leading. The song ends with the repetition of "Bright Eyes" and the question of how something so bright can suddenly become so pale. The song leaves the listener with the impression that the mysteries of life and death are endless and elusive.

I loved this song as a 6/7 years old boy in..1978.. and the film. Watership down. Made me sad / cry..
Root for the hero/underdog...
Even at that young age.
...but....
I awoke before with Arts voice in my head.and had to immediately play it..and now at 50.and a not in great health man..
Arts words are now only just really
Understood
Properly..
And still moved me to
Tears ..
Amazingly
Moving
